Possible solution.

Give the Iocrym a virtual device that regenerates 25 QSD shells every 2 realtime minutes once its inventory is depleted (or <25 shells remaining), back up to 100 shells.

Look at the code for the sphere, repairing an item struct only affects that one struct, not the rest of the ship's item structs. It would probably be better to remove and re-add the item to the ship after you are finished.

They don't hire random people, you have to prove yourself before you even get that mission. Personally though, I would add a few enemies patrolling the area and require that the player remove them.

Well, if George were to implement this, then he would have to change the underlying code for dockscreens (which has been almost untouched since at least 0.95). I prefer to believe that he is making the layout and contents of the dockscreens modifiable via the XML and has yet to perfect it.

That was the point I was subtly making. It's a good source for getting rare items.
