NPC ships in Escape Velocity: Override would do something like this, but all of the unique NPCs in Transcendence (aside from mods) are currently plot-relevant. Having every NPC ship send out greetings would add an awful lot of chatter to try to sort through, even if you trimmed it down to ones not ...

I definitely like that idea. Restricting fast, accurate weapons like lasers to short range, letting bullets be more difficult to use but longer ranged, and (most importantly) making the highest ranged weapons ammo - based or in possession of other significant drawbacks is a good balancing strategy. ...

I think the best improvement would be to add a bit more character to the background. It's almost always just a flat set of stars right now. Adding a few layers of stars with parallax effect, some background nebula(particularly in nebula heavy systems) and foreground effects(like the little particles...

I like the 'saves' that take you to the stats screen, but there should be an option to have the game also generate a save right before you gate out of human space. I also agree that the shops should default to the 'all' tab, and that some sort of tab switching hotkeys(number keys?) should be added.

oh, i see... i never understood what made the antarctica appear. In most of the game's well designed missions, enemies don't 'appear'. They're always there, and you can interact with them beforehand. Upgradable wingmen is a bit off topic, but I personally prefer that friendlies improve themselves without needing micromanagement. Having to micromanage wingmens' equipment slows things down and makes them feel less like other individuals.
