The Kronosaurus is sent after you for killing frigates. When you kill 5 of them, the kronosaurus will hunt you, no matter where you are in the game. It is not tied to you escorting freighters. So this can still happen, for example in Charon, there are usually some frigates out there.

Never had that happening in 1.7

Normally stuff doesn't vanish, unless you get killed and ressurrect, then you will lose everything in the hold you acquired since entering the system you died in.

Do you have any mods installed?

Plasmas cannot be enhanced, and are usually underpowered even without considering that. A thermo howitzer can be taken up to +150% with tritium injectors, and then further enhanced with a speedloader(plus a lithium booster if you're running CC). I do not use many mods, mostly because Xelerus looks old and offers a lot of incompatible mods. It perhaps once was a good solution, but it is definitely showing it's age.
