Use the disposable launcher and the SmartCannon. You get them for a reason; they're better weapons than any of the base ships start with.

If the item is externally-mounted, it'll say that among the other flags on the item, where it says stuff like "WMD4", "cloud", "omnidirectional", etc. If I recall correctly, solar panels are an early example of externally-mounted items, and they're subject to the same ease of damaging that externall...

Later in the game you can find linked-fire weapons that can fire at the same time as your main weapon. However, in addition to eating into your energy budget, they tend to be externally-mounted, which means they can easily be damaged (irreparably in most cases) by enemy weapons' fire. I am not sure about this, given how old Transcendence is. We identify items much like a roguelike, and stuff like fabricators had even fewer hints than today. We still have annoying legacy features like solvent eating your items when you can completely avoid it by dropping everything before opening...
