I don't think you are doing anything wrong, it just takes a LOT of buying from the Black Market to get to Lord rank. The ranks are based on the number of xp you have. It starts off fairly easy, civilians have 1xp, and doubles or triples through the ranks up to 3000xp for Member. But it then jumps to...

You are correct, it does require an auton bay which is part of the Corporate Command (aka CC) expansion.
One of the CC playerships comes equipped with the Nami auton bay at game start, or you can order one at a Corporate Trading Post. Rarely they are available to buy at larger stations.

Which mods have you tried? And which ones didn't work? It is difficult for mod writers to keep up with the many changes to the game, so good mods may not work in current game versions. Thank you both. I can make it work now. Searching for the two text IDs led me to fmtNoun. There are enough examples of this function to allow me to work out how to use it with a "ship(s)" text ID. Good stuff! :D

You are doing nothing wrong, @superdad. This confused me too.
The requirement to join the IMU (Interstellar Miners Union in Corporate Command) to increase your rank has been removed in 1.9b4 so promotions will work as expected.

Thank you. I had a quick look at the new Squadron features. They look good. Now I need to work out how to use them!
