It will attempt to loot on a per item basis even if your hold is full (or mostly full). It will run through the list of items, starting with the most valuable for its weight, and loot what will fit. If an item won't fit it will skip it and look at the next until there are no more. It might only grab...

You can adjust the AISettings tag on the ship in question. Increasing perception increases distance it can target (or see, I think, if a non player ship. the default is 4).

There's a glitch where a ship in formation doesn't respect its own max speed. Get a group of fleet wingmen (or a dwarg behemoth) and fly in a straight line, they will keep up despite not having an enhanced titan fusion drive. Do we have a point of view function yet? You could produce one drone, make it the player ship, then put the player back in control of the original ship. Anything attacking the playership will go for the drone.
