It's actually worth it to buy ore at the mining stations to sell there. At least ore other than Titanium. Not sure about it.

You were mining, weren't you?
my bad, it wasn't entirely eridani. the second system was just loaded with stuff (broken weapons, broken armor, asteroids, it adds up) and it was looking great until i died.

It's also worth mentioning that while the freighter (unloaded) might be able to outrun the pirate frigate, it probably won't escape from the escorts unless it starts running the minute it sees the fleet show up on radar.

The escorts are usually fast tier II ships with shields and missile launchers, so they'll make pretty quick work of you early on.

I don't mind the challenge now that I'm aware of it - but it definitely discourages doing the Korlov escort missions for money early on when you desperately need it, and players new to the game may find such an early 'spoiler' ship a bit off putting.

If you know what you're doing there are things the freighter can do. For instance try reinforced titanium barricades. I think you can loot them from salvager nomads.

Admittedly they're not as intuitive as the things the Wolfen and Sapphire can do. Maybe some of the hints given in rumors should vary with the playership you're using.

even quad barricades go down fast against stilletos and omni turbos. with my play style, i didn't even get a chance to upgrade at all because the korolov was so early. i know better now not to accept the mission unless i have at least level 5 armor.

If transcendence was modelled in anyway like nethack, then the difficulty is just about right. The idea is that you just can't go blitzing through the initial stages without atleast minor upgrades. Which, IMO, is a tutorial in itself for newer players as later stages are even harder to just rung through and need you to have good eq.

And, I play the freighter a lot myself, and it's cargo capacity and mass (as you don't get encumbered) means that you are encouraged to strip every system of every credit and trade every possible route (it's a freighter!!!). This usually gives me more money than when I'm playing with the other ships balanced by the fact that it's not as good in combat.

Oh, and early tinkers are a blessing if you don't have enough money. Real cheap armor.

I have found myself pinned down by the charon frigate and support fleet while piloting the freighter, I managed to make it from the gate to a planet and only lost half my armor HP. From there I waited until the frigate and some of the ships circled past the direction I wanted to go (hoping for a friendly station) so that by the time I was off the planet, the big mean ships were on the far side. Thrust until you hit max speed and then spin around and fire directly behind you. You probably won't kill much but the weapon fire should destroy a sizeable portion of the incoming missiles, saving your shield for the laser fire. Sometimes it is hopeless and you have to back and mine or take your chances picking off CW ships to try and scrounge enough creds to get some reactive paste or an ICX just to be able to survive running from that encounter. And sometimes you just die.

Another thing which you can do with the freighter is to try and use all your armor sections. Rotate and leave your best towards your enemies. Since it's likely that you are using an omni weapon this is very simple.

It's possible to do this with the other ships even when you are not using an omni weapon. The idea is to let your front and side sections get hit equally when you are atacking. Let your rear section be relatively intact. Incase you have to run away cuz your other armor segments are too badly damaged, you can let the rear take the hits till you get to a safe distance.

Oh, and sustain's a life saver. The I and then A combo should be on your fingertips in any serious fight...

My only real gripe with the freighter is that during the Charon base attack missions, the gunships fly at 20c. The freighter is only capable of 18 and this leads you to fall behind. Usually the gunships fly in a straight line but for a very long distance, they do make adjustments and it gets annoying to find the Stronghold....

Those missions should give a target, either the station directly, or the lead gunship (in which case you know the true vector and shouldn't get lost if they outrun you).

I'm finding Charon itself to be a massive problem, though I guess that was intended.

I found Charon to be too hard. It seems like every ship in the system comes after you after the Koralov base is destroyed and they keep respawning. You have to come back to Charon after getting some better equipment the way it is right now.

I took on charon with a dual particle cannon and a Mark VIII howitzer (yay for arena weapon dealers!)

Charon has always been a bit of a crapshoot- theres a mechasism on Charon Strongholds that has a random chance of setting off the zerg rush. If this happens when theres still a lot of other bases to call in reinforcements, things can quickly get 'interesting'.
