Do you mean automatically downloaded? That's a good idea. But not trivial, unfortunately. I'll look into it.

p.s.: In case you're wondering, my scale for how hard something is to implement is:

Trivial == It will take me one minute to implement and several weeks to fix the regression bugs I introduced.
Not Trivial == It will take me a day to implement but I'm too lazy right now to do that.
Complete Re-Write == I would have to admit that my original architecture did not account for this case and I'm mentally unwilling to do that.

Just hold down 1 for a couple of seconds in a sell dockscreens and it works.
I can't quite reproduce it. Can anyone else? Also, which station/screen did you try it on? Thank you!
Sorry about that, it seems that it's well fixed in vanilla.
It was probably a mod causing the problem that I experienced. (finding which one will be daunting as it was Succession 7 modpack)

No way to have it use the existing framework and have it 'pretend' to be an extension?

Some recommendations for the target health bar UI:

1) Halve the height, possibly the width as well.

2) Make the empty part of the bar a translucent black rather than completely transparent (for when smoke and stuff is making the background non-black

3) Consider a translucent-black outline as well

3) Give wingmen a green equivalent

4) Make it require the enhanced display rom (or does it already?)

I think the point of visible health bars is UI friendliness for those who do not have ROMs installed.

I wonder if we are fast approaching the point when things like the targeting rom really just need to be preinstalled, (perhaps toggleable for ui stuff?) like the autopilot rom is [in early versions i dont think it was preinstalled]

I think targeting program is just as vital as autopilot and should be pre-installed automatically. AI can target and launch missiles and beams at anything with ease, but you cannot without targeting program.

When I play EI500, I start-scum for targeting program - always.

I always play the games I start. If I don't get a targeting rom, the game is harder, but not unplayable. It is a though universe and your equipment may turn out to be less than optimal. Having it pre-installed would make the game less interesting in my opinion (and you can always use a mod to have it pre-installed if you like).

Just my thoughts,

Fast gunships can probably get away without targeting program for a while, but it is still a frustrating experience (for me) without it, especially once I get homing missiles or SmartCannon. EI500 absolutely needs it - it is slow and its omni laser greatly benefits from it.

1.3 betas have mitigated much of what would have made targeting must-have: beacons that used to have outrageous radius and sucked your ship into them instead of the Commonwealth station when you tried to dock with the latter, and damage taken by enemies (now many have floating red health bar). EDIT - Also the recent Break & Attack for autons. Without it, autons were useless without targeting program. Even with targeting program, it was a pain to target then order [A] for every single enemy.

I think that targeting rom isn't important other then for using rockets

Using guided missiles is part of the tutorial quest.

Targeting is also critical for using turrets beyond their very short automatic tracking range, which becomes increasingly important as the game progresses.

It also gives you a vector and lets you assess damage against ships not on the screen, which helps you aim and determine if you're actually hitting. Past LRS range the targeting ROM is the only way to aim at all. This, too, becomes increasingly important as weapon ranges rise.

It also give you a view of the target itself, telling you where it's aiming, turning, or flying to. You can see if it's fleeing or engaging you from outside the screen, and in theory even adjust your aim according to it's facing.

I agree that it's a very important part of the game, but I think needing to find it is good. But perhaps make it more common or make a quest that sends you searching for it. Maybe even put it in Arco's Habitat.
Yes, look at my avatar, I have a wyvera type ship.

I used to, before the map was changed to its currently slightly inclined angle. Actually… Hey, George, would it be possible to put something in the Settings.xml file to let you choose which map version you can use, something like flatMap="true" or the like?

That might work on stations, but it doesn't work on ships that don't have docking ports
