Exactly as the title says, for some reason my laptop cannot load transcendence. The game crashes before it even makes it to the menu screen and this is true for both the 1.05 and 1.01 versions. I learned about and started playing transcendence when version 1.03 was out, but decided to stop and delete it because I wanted to wait for the next stable version(even though I had no problems with 1.03). I couldn't wait anymore, but can't get the game to run now. Help me please?

hi

have you tried any of the =lines]command line switches

to use, make a shortcut to transcendence.exe in the target box of properties in the shortcut (should look something like "C:\Trans105\Transcendence.exe") put the switch (eg /debug) after "C:\Trans105\Transcendence.exe"
it should look like "C:\Trans105\Transcendence.exe" /debug

I just tried all of the command line switches and it's still the same, the game crashes before I get to the menu screen.

Here are the debug notes if it helps:

Hi cptfabulous,
welcome to the Forums.
I'll ask you a few more questions, sorry if some will sound silly to you, but since we don't know your computer skills nor your computer configuration, it's better to just ask everything.

Are you running the game from a USB drive ? Can you double-check if you have write access to the folder ? (we had people with that problem before)

Are you running any mods ?

Is 1.01 or 1.05 the first version of the game you try to play or did you successfully play a previous version of the game ?
http://wiki.neurohack.com/transcendence ... on_history

Did you try to close all other running programs to check for conflicts ? (antivirus and so on)

Are you running the game on native windows (and so, which version) or maybe, are you using Wine ?

Did you try to re-download the game and reinstall it ?

Can you check if your video drivers are working properly ?

thanks for your patience

I presume you have no mods in use?

I definitely not the most tech savvy person so it is very possible that it is a user error.

Nope, I'm not running any mods. I'm not running the game off a usb stick and I do have write access to the folder(I actually had to look up what write access was). I'm not sure if this matters, but the folder does have the read-only attribute which I can't seem to remove.

I successfully played 1.03 without any problems whatsoever. I then deleted it, upgraded from vista to windows 7 home premium and tried version 1.05. It wouldn't load so I deleted it and tried 1.01 which again didn't work. In a desperate desire to play again, I deleted 1.01, re-downloaded 1.05, but again it failed to load properly

I'm not sure how to check my video drivers but I can run other games like Minecraft just fine.

It isn't conflicting with my anti-virus and the only other program I've tried to run at the same time is firefox.

I've also tried running it in the recommended compatibility mode, but that didn't help either.

my system specs are:
processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2GHz 2GHz
Ram: 4 GB
system type: 64-bit operating system
video card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

Thanks for any help you can give me. If worst comes to worst, I'll just wait till I get home from college and play it on my desktop :P

yes, i think read only is causing it, you should be able to just uncheck the box.

nope, read-only folders don't have the same properties as read-only files.

have a look at here:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1024823382
Hi All! Here is the cause of this read-only attribute problem, as well as the way to work around it. This was taken from the Microsoft support knowledge base. Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer. The Read-only and System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the folder is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view customized by Windows (for example, My Documents, Favorites, Fonts, Downloaded Program Files), or a folder that you customized by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box. As a result, Windows Explorer does not allow you to view or change the Read-only or System attributes of folders. Note In some previous versions of Windows, you can change the Read-only attribute for folders by using the Properties dialog box for the folder, but no versions of Windows permit you to change the System attribute by using Windows Explorer. WORKAROUND To work around this issue, use the Attrib command at a command prompt (Cmd.exe) to view or remove the Read-only or System attributes of folders. Type attrib /? at the command prompt to view the syntax for the Attrib command. Warning If you remove the Read-only or System attribute from a folder, it may appear as a ordinary folder and some customizations may be lost. For example, Windows customizes the Fonts folder and provides a special folder view that permits you to hide variations, such as bold and italic. It also permits you to change the folder's view settings in ways that are specific to fonts. If you remove the Read-only and System attributes of the Fonts folder, these customized view settings are not available. For folders that you have customized by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box, the folder icon and other other customizations may be lost when you remove the Read-only attribute. If a program cannot save files to a folder with the Read-only attribute, such as My Documents, change the Read-only attribute to System by using the Attrib command at a command prompt. For example, to change the Read-only attribute to System for the C:\Test folder, use the following command: attrib -r +s c:\test Note that some programs may not operate correctly with folders that have the System attribute set. To remove both the Read-only and System attributes from the C:\Test folder, use the following command: attrib -r -s c:\test
In short, read-only folders are not a problem.
system type: 64-bit operating system
I never tried Transcendence on 64bit systems and I don't have an experience on them. Anyone can give some insight if Transcendence has some problems on 64bit ?
I successfully played 1.03 without any problems whatsoever. I then deleted it, upgraded from vista to windows 7 home premium and tried version 1.05. It wouldn't load so I deleted it and tried 1.01 which again didn't work.
I don't believe that an OS upgrade is causing troubles, however, you pointed out that as the major action you did on your system between a working Transcendence game and a not working one.
Transcendence is reported to work without troubles on windows 7, I wonder if, again, this is a 64bit OS problem ?

IU run 64 bit Windows 7. No problems. I think it, however, does run from the upgrade- Installing Windows 7 over Vista has caused SO many problems; I actually wiped my harddrive and dropped a brand new Windows 7 installation in. It means you have to reset all your preferences, etc. but it's worth it in the end.

Yeah.. I don't know why the Trans105 folder gets set to "read only" at times. Maybe a when the game crashes?

THEY MADE IT HAPPEN if they set the file to read only: the game requires the ability to write to the save file.

I crashed my games in 1.0, 1.01, 1.04, 1.05, 1.06D.......they always come back to life after suggesting i report to Neurohack that I am a Terrible Mod maker
