What shield do you prefer..

I'd have gotten... anyother level X weapon other than the positron lancer (or iocrym repeller). The Positron lancer uses way to much power for the rather underwhelming performance it gives.

I probably should have went for that Ion Flame Cannon I saw in a Teraton Nest, then. Oh well, time to farm some Luminous Drones.

If you have good armor, you can fight until you get it to low condition. Then run....takes some evasive turns, but it works.

Yeah, and if you don't have good armor you can fight until your shield gets low then run. There's no real difference between shield HP and armor HP. Shields usually drop faster than armor, but not always.

In early game I use mining laser + Solon shields. (I turned the shields off when I actually mined). Now I have Yoroi S500 + SN2500 + Plasma Torch. I want a plasma shield generator to pile longzhu spheres on. Last game I had plasma shield generator+100% (better than Iocrym veil) with light Iocrym armor.
I saw heavy Iocrym armor on sale @ Teraton nest 4 25000 rins. Too heavy for my Sapphire though...

Early on, I go with a class III shield, no questions asked.

Later, I swap over to some kind of 50mw shield -- usually ones with very high HP and slow regen -- like the Mammoth. I balance this with heavy firepower.

For instance, my best game as a wolfen (almost got to core) saw me packing a FusionFire Howitzer ( + stats) and I think a Mammoth 100Mw (?) with +HP.

Given the player is supposed to survive multiple battles with the mook ships, it would suggest either superb piloting skills or armor, or both.

In early game it doesn't really matter.
In midgame - various Yorois or, if I'm lucky (and wealthy) - Omsk. Hiro's optimizer + Mark I Omsk + 4 light Omsk segments is almost cheating (270 HP before StK?). Later - plasma shield.
Later - Kaidun, at least +100%. It's very easy to obtain one - just lure Phobos to CSC

It's probably my old habit from 0.99c, but I love my Nephren P25s.

Hm. I've lured Phobos to CSC, and he blew it up. I was forced to buy Taikon-200 (not tested yet - I've spent ~45 minutes searching for Hyperion Reactor - RNG did't created any Ringers - even collective).
