I was trying to refer to specific save files?

Are they possible in the same folder?

Just to let you know, I am used to working with a mod manager.
Ex.
Wrye Bash (TES IV:Oblivion)
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368

How about a name for each save
Ex.
WhateverNameIChoose-DateTime.SAV

Without the game making reg edits.

you can have the same save file in the game folder as you want and call them up any time you choose by changing your name.

In fact, I could have:
username.sav
and then make a copy of it ("copy of username.sav"), and load up the copy and so in-game, I would be "copy of username.sav"

The in-game name is pulled directly from the name of the file ;)

It is a starting point I suppose. Forcing the user to enter a username might be annoying? We could also just all start with a generic username, like "Steve" :D

Nevermind... I renamed my .SAV file to PlainJOEfromPlanetX#893453.SAV.

It would be nice to have a better User Interface for managing saves.

Not having to hit Enter after manually typing the sav name.

Sutch as a pull down menu or a simple "which one?" dialog.
