Anyone got a copy of Frontier 0.5 they can share?

Post by Shrike » Mon Jun 20, 2016 9:35 am

A bunch of us were talking about maybe looking at Frontier 0.5 (the 1995 game prototype by George that's an ancestor to Transcendence) to get some more ideas for fun stuff that we could recreate in Transcendence. Alas, we quite rapidly discovered a single, small issue with this rather excellent plan: None of us actually have Frontier on our systems, and the old download link is dead. Efforts to revive my old laptop have failed (i need to update packages in ubuntu to fix the login problems that are stopping me from getting around the security features that are stopping me from updating packages) and so before bothering George again (as would normally be my first move, I'll admit)......does anyone have the .exe saved somewhere?

(Obviously George definitely does unless he's lost it at some point, but anyone else is welcome too. :P )

Cool. Time to go whinge about the lack of saving in a 20-year-old prototype. ^_^

Pretty much. George has an old Neurohack post explaining:
Frontier was my first attempt at creating a cross between Nethack and Star Control II and as you can see from the description, Transcendence is Frontier's direct descendant.
The Osaka playership is taken directly from it - it's the playership in Frontier. It's interesting seeing what survived and what didn't, since Frontier features non-gate interstellar travel and some elements carried over from Anacreon, like Trillium for fuel.
