We recommend the following metrics:

3D models scale: 0.1 units per meter.
Object position: At origin.
Camera position: X=0 Y=-400 Z=800.
Camera directon: Pointing to origin (angles: 153.44 0.0 180.0)
Camera viewport: Centered on origin, zoomed to fit object.
Note: You will need to specify a viewportRatio in the image descriptor in order for the engine to have the proper 3D projection parameters. The viewport ratio is the ratio of the viewport width to the height of the camera.

Light Settings
The main light source is an infinite, soft-shadowed, white light source:

Light position: X=-500 Y=300 Z=500
Light direction: Pointing to origin (angles: -149.04, -40.61, 47.33)
Note that from the camera's perspective the object is slightly backlit. This accentuates shadows and evokes the darkness of space.
In order to understand how to properly create models according to these specifications, I would need to know how to use TrueSpace. However, it has a very difficult learning curve and there is not much I can learn from the GUI or whatever manual there is. So I would like a stream series (at least 3 sessions long) on how George uses TrueSpace. Specifically, I want to see a step-by-step process by which George constructs an Ares Advanced Sentry from scratch, referring to the original model as needed. This mostly means no copy-pasting any objects directly from the original model. I would like to learn about the following topics listed below.
  1. Adding polygons
  2. Adding textures
  3. Adding lights
  4. Adding cameras
  5. Rendering
  6. Anything else that George does with TrueSpace

I think this is a great idea. I'll start with that tomorrow.

I have some unanswered questions about TrueSpace
1. How do you set up a TrueSpace scene to automatically render 120-facings / N-facings for ships or frames for animated stations like Teraton Defenders?
2. How do you produce your textures?
3. How do you create that second viewing window (with the wireframe view), the object info panel, and the texture panel?

Thanks for the session.

Can you demonstrate how you create textures and bumpmaps such as GreenVespid.jpg and HogonPlates.jpg?

George: Do you have any specific guidelines on how to render Item Images and Hero Images?

For hero images, he specifically said in a recent stream that he just uses the upward pointing facing rendered at 320x320. I’d asked the same question.
