railgun rails should be braced to keep them from collapsing onto eachother.

Torpedo launcher looks great, but the ammo could use a bit more of a point, if for nothing else than historic design choices...
I'll look into changing it, atm they're just half spheres, i've changed the launcher into a 2 pack inside a single case.
railgun rails should be braced to keep them from collapsing onto eachother.
Been trying different things to fix that, but so far i haven't found anything i liked. Given how a railgun works, and that it's in zero g, that wouldn't really be a problem.

Also I've changed the camera angle, the missile launchers didn't like the old one. Do you guys think it looks better or should i switch back?

Personally Vizth, I like the old pic better. It's less similar to the vanilla angles but you can see the dual barrel assemblies more distinctly.

Will you be keeping the background in the final versions or is that just for reference?

Well honestly, given how a railgun works, both sides are highly magnetized, so they would fall into each other. Gravity doesn't enter into it. Simple enough to fix tho, just add some pieces of metal on the outside, bolted onto each side. So long as they're not in the path of the projectile, they can even be directly between the rails.

Well honestly, given how a railgun works, both sides are highly magnetized, so they would fall into each other.
Nope, they are pushed apart, it's the classical homopolar motor example, or it can be explained with a single coil circuit example

From wikipedia:
A railgun consists of two parallel metal rails (hence the name) connected to an electrical power supply. When a conductive projectile is inserted between the rails (at the end connected to the power supply), it completes the circuit. Electrons flow from the negative terminal of the power supply up the negative rail, across the projectile, and down the positive rail, back to the power supply.

This current makes the railgun behave as an electromagnet, creating a powerful magnetic field in the region of the rails up to the position of the projectile. In accordance with the right-hand rule, the magnetic field circulates around each conductor. Since the current is in opposite direction along each rail, the net magnetic field between the rails (B) is directed vertically. In combination with the current (I) across the projectile, this produces a Lorentz force which accelerates the projectile along the rails. There are also forces acting on the rails attempting to push them apart, but since the rails are mounted firmly, they cannot move. The projectile slides up the rails away from the power supply.

I would assume that the materials available in 400 years from now will be able to handle the force. Nano manufacturers could produce a metalic polymer that resists the torsion or perhaps the electromagnet is so strong the 'rails' are only used to guide the sabot.
The magnetic monopole was finally detected in sept '09 and will definitely be useful for developing a working railgun eventually.

Are you guys all weapons fabricators or physicists? I am always amazed at the amount of knowledge and speculation that goes into the construction of weapons here... keep it coming, one day, it will all be true! :D

Hopefully not. Humanity would be better off not going the way of the warrior.

Ok, old angle it is then, I'll have to keep the new one for the missiles though, they don't fit well the old one. the background is just to make the preview renders standout more, they'll be done with an alpha like the other icons in game when they're finished.
