Updates sound interesting, can you make it possible to *upgrade* lighter versions of an armor to heavier versions of armor
using some proportion of weight (say ultralight steel armor is 1 ton and light is 2.5 tons; combine 3 ultralight armors to make one light one of the same type)
I was always bugged by the fact that titanium is weak crap in terms of armor, steel is by far more abundant, and strong enough for space stations, though *Heavy* and I always think that Titanium is some synonym for Aluminium in George's Head.
Good luck with standardized *types* of shield, I hope that some of them will regularly be stronger/weaker vs different types of damage, like they logically would:
Magnetic good against ion, plasma, kinetic
Particle good against laser, ion, positron
Plasma good against blast, ion, thermo, plasma (duh)
Energy good against kinetic, blast, thermo, plasma
and so on...

Explanation: From "rediscovery" and "unknown". Since you follow the original pilgrim's footsteps, you are essentially rediscovering what was to the original pilgrim the unknown. Another way to look at it is that since so much has changed that the known has become unknown again, hence the "re-".
Okay, I admit I was compelled to explain in a way that is even more convoluted than the thing being explained because that's what English majors do.... Habits die hard.
