Greetings, Starfighter. You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada. Get ready! Prepare for blast off...
Here is a first look. I have the sprite sheet all printed out and ready to go in 20, 40 and 72 facings. I'm still working on the targeting systems. I still have to contact George about adding the category for cursors so I can get the targeting to work correctly. I also have a simple idea for the Death Blossom but I still need to work on it a bit. (my way of saying I'm still learning XML).
Opinions? Thoughts? Ideas? Comments? Dirty Jokes?
I look forward to them all...

Great job on the sprite! I hope to see the completed version

It's very big. Your in-game sprite should probably be substantially smaller: around the size of a Manticore.
It also looks untextured. The model is complicated enough to mostly stand on its own, but texturing really does help, especially with the large render for ship selection and the ship internal menu.

At the very most, at least if you’re trying for an authentic scale for the ship. It’s been a while since I’ve seen The Last Starfighter, but I’m pretty sure that 80x80 frames would be overdoing it, and even the 64x64 frames of the EI500 would be a bit much. Check here for an idea on what the size should be. It’s a bit inaccurate, considering that the ships in the game don’t quite line up with itAtarlost wrote:It's very big. It could use a paint job, yeah. The detail on the ship is great — a lot better than anything I’ve made to date; excellent work on the model — but with just the default flat texture, it’s probably going to turn out looking rather bland in comparison to other ships in the game.Atarlost wrote:It also looks untextured. Of all the things I’ve lost in life, I miss my mind the least. (I’m having a lot more fun without it!)
The playable version will be resized to be more appropriate to the game scale.
As to the color... I'll have to see what I can do with the contrast. But those ships were pretty bland as far as color. Have you seen the movie recently? That ship is WHITE. I mean like Barbie and Ken white, WHITE. The only real color on the ship is the Blaze on the side which comes in colors of dark-ish blue, and a shade of purple. Everything else on that ship is shades of grey and/or Black/white. You might get away with calling it polished metal, but no matter how you stack it that ship is pretty pale. I might get a little creative and try to mix in some bronze undertones for a more metalic look but much more than that and it wont look right.
That is why this is a 'first look', to help address these kinds of issues.
Thank you, everyone, for your comments and help.
Back on my head...

I have to agree on the colouring problems: The original colour-scheme will be hard to make workable. Although you'd probably get away with a few changes (not necessarily in colours...a few texture tweaks might help)....the movie was seriously-really-super-early-CGI mixed with traditional models and really hasn't aged that well, so a few deviations to liven it up might be OK. I look forward to how the Death Blossom turns out though....it sounds fairly workable.

If you look at the original ship it isn't nearly that white. There are lots of black patches on it, upwards I'd say of 40% maybe. Also I would suggest making the engines a little skinnier and bulking up the sides of the ship in the back between the engines. The sides should be trying to make a circle around the ship and stick out a little farther than the engines.
