I was curious to know the possibility of having a fuel expansion tank. It could work like the modern day fuel tanks that are equiped on fighter planes; it would allow your ship to carry more fuel without taking up cargo space.
Another semi-related question, does the amount of fuel currently being used in your ship have any influence on the total mass?

I haven't thought about fuel expansion tanks, mostly because I think it's not too much of a sacrifice to use cargo space--but I could be wrong.
Right now when you refuel your ship, the fuel is consumed and no longer counts as mass. This is slightly unrealistic, but it averages out (in reality, the fuel would be consumed over time instead of all at once).
