How did you manage to keep the first one alive so long? I suspect this would happen if you had them when you got wingmen for a mission too.

I didn't 
all you have to do is to find *two* Commonweath Fortresses get the first one at the seccond station, escort to first station, do frieghter missions(could be done with omni-particle and shuriken but I was lucky and had an Ion Blaster and a 500MW) get Rama at first station. Not too hard if the CWF is at the edge of the system(not intervening badugys) and an early system. btw, the problem is ixed if you simply order them into a new formation.
