So 1.7 brings support for achievements, at least on the Steam version. Let's have a bit of fun thinking of (sensible) stuff that could work as achievements. I'm half expecting that George has already got them all worked out for the first set anyway, but hey, this is fun:

[Note: No microsaur-based stuff. Memetic popularity aside, it is just a misc item right now]
[Note also: Yes, I know quite a few players don't use steam and thus do not care about achievements. If that's the case, this thread is probably not the place to hang out. That being said, some ideas here might work as conducts or A&R section additions in future]

Obvious ones/plot ones we probably don't need to go over
-Save/clear Charon
-Save Point Juno
-Save/kill Antarctica
-Complete SOTP I
-Permadeath SOTP I
-Various Milestones for Eternity Port, you get the idea

-Complete the Hauri plotline [Would work best as a hidden achievement for obvious reasons]

But that stuff's fairly boring checklist stuff. Where the fun lies is in the more unique achievements that are possible in the game. I've given them names, but that's more for my enjoyment than anything else:

"Event"/skill achievement ideas

Just a scratch: Survive a battle with one or more armor segments on 0hp, having killed the enemy that did that damage. (This would be really hard to track, but it does happen!)
Technical Pacifist: Complete Stars of the Pilgrim (Part I) without firing a weapon (alternatively, without killing anything yourself). Autons and wingmen don't count!
Oops!: Blow yourself up by getting too close to an exploding ship or station
Speedrun: I dunno what a good time for a speedrunning achievement would be, but I'm sure Xephyr does.
Anything for Science!: Donate your body to science at a teraton lab (....and learn why this isn't the best idea)
Indigestion: Get eaten by a fabricator
Strike!: Kill ten enemies with one missile
Hole in one: Disable an enemy ship with EMP or the CDM shard so that it falls into the gravity well of Sirius B (or other gravity wells)
They're in my eyes!: Have X Pteravores (Maybe 10?) on the ship at any given time, and don't die until they've all left (and the ship is free of all parasites)
------------

These are all just wild ideas, but it might be some good fun for us to think about what we'd like to see as achievements that could go into the game when support is added. Maybe if George likes some, he'll pick them out for implementation at one stage or another. :)

Philanthropist - Donate X amount of credits to Domina (probably 50,000+)
Plutocrat - Reach 1,000,000 creadits
Dominant - Unlock the "Shatter" power
No Kill like Overkill - Enhance a weapon to 150%
Space Pirate - Kill a friendly freighter

With a Bang - Killed in an explosion (this will be a popular one :P )

All of the "achievements and regrets" could probably be worked into achievements.
Poking the Beehive - Killed by a Ferian Warrior

As for speedrunning: Any time under an hour is probably fair for an achievement. It's a pretty relaxed run, but it's a short enough timespan that not a lot of people could achieve it.

Probably not all of them. But all the conducts should work, and most of the major A's & R's should work.

Nasser’d! — Get blown up by Anton Nasser.
I Fought The Law And The Law Won — Get arrested.
Lookit Me! — Hidden achievement for those who find a bug and get their name in the credits.
Out Of Gas — Run out of fuel (and it doesn’t count if you survive due to the grace period from having fuel on-board).
Taking You With Me — Destroy a ship that you also got destroyed by, double-KO-style (getting blown up by a ship/station explosion does not count).
Dread Pirate Roberts — Destroy every non-immutable station in the game (“I am the Dread Pirate Roberts! There will be no survivors!”)

I was thinking we ought to have a thread like this sometime soon.

Off the top of my head:

Easy

Summer job: Pass initiation for Korolov shipping.

Cleaning the streets: Completely clear a system of hostiles.

Target of opportunity: Order a Fleet squadron to destroy a hostile station that is not the mission objective.

Forgetful: Ask Point Juno for a recap on what the code was.

Tough to say goodbye: Visit your family.

Medium

Overprotective: Destroy a Charon Frigate that is attacking a freighter the player is escorting.

Scorched earth: Destroy every Huari station in every system.

'Genuine dreadnought killer': Destroy a Phobos.

Full house: Acquire Volkov, Jenna, and Rama.

Smooth criminal: Get away with mass destruction.

Debatable ethics: Destroy and loot a Black Market station.

Reckless driver: Get blacklisted by Clavicus for dying too many times.

Helpful: Rescue Katami, find Dall's sphere, and protect Benedict's freighter.

Hard

Demolitions expert: Complete the game using only launchers.

Man's best friend: Bring a Zoanthrope Behemoth to Heretic without the use of Elysium.

Ender would be proud: Destroy every Ares station in every system, and acquire the Lamplighter Archcannon.

No going back: Clear every system of hostile stations without backtracking.

Very hard

Aegis: Complete the game without taking armor damage.

Cattle drive: Escort the maximum possible number of Aurochs transports for the Fleet in one game.

Pacifist: Complete the game without killing a single manned ship.

Perfectionist: Complete the game with no friendlies killed, no backtracking, permadeath, no use of Domina powers, and maximum rank in the Fleet, Militia, Arena, and Syndikat.

How about this:
Headshot!: Killed by enemy and their last shot to player from the front.
Backstabbed!: Killed by enemy and their last shot to player from the back.
(About rear playership, I don't know good name for that).
Passingthrough: using passthrough weapon and killed three enemy at once.
Mining is dangerous: detonate a scanner pod or exvacation pod and kill an enemy.
Infector: using actnicide waste cannon, and contaminating an enemy.
Unlucky Criminal: Get cought when smuggling.
Blindly shoot: Launching 100 missile that hit enemy without targeting them in a row.
Sacrifice Suicide: Self destruct and kill enemies by playership's explosion. (It hard to try without any exploding items, but usually player will carry thermo-type (Missile) items and self destruct with lesser enemy)
Love, Home, and Destiny: Allowed Volkov find his wife, Allowed Jenna go home, and Allowed Rama meet his destiny.

Am I the only one who disapproves of having "achievements" for screwing up?

But I do have some ideas for pithy names:

Legendary: Become the champion of the Arena without backtracking
Olympian: Defend Point Juno from an Ares attack
Fearless: Destroy a Phobos-class dreadnought
Peacemaker?: Defend the CSC Antarctica
Light 'Em Up: Acquire the Lamplighter archcannon
Xenocide: Destroy a Xenophobe Ark
Elite: Hack into the Iocrym archive
Outbreak: Escape the Quarantine Zone
Agnostic: Escape the Quarantine Zone without invoking the powers of Domina
Singleminded: Escape the Quarantine Zone without backtracking
Immortal: Escape the Quarantine Zone without resurrecting

Rude Awakening: Destroy a Dreaming Nomad
Cutting Edge: Acquire the Morana archcannon
Hot Stuff: Acquire the Baihu archcannon
Into the Sunset: retire to Eternity Port
Eternal: retire to Eternity Port without resurrecting

Nope, I do too. One or two that the player will almost certainly get(like for dying once, or for getting latched onto by a petravore) are okay, but multiple achievements for killing oneself in really contrived or repetitive ways come off as counterintuitive and boring to collect.

Dying in various colourful ways is the cornerstone of a roguelike, and shows how much of the game was actually explored.

Not a fan of numerous, frivolous achievements because that encourages compulsive "gotta-catch-em-all" behavior, especially if they lock game content until enough are found. That said, they are a useful tool, along with other encouraged behaviors like farming or grinding, to keep gamers hooked to a (commercial) game that profits from more play hours.
Download and Play in 1.9 beta 1...
Drake Technologies (Alpha): More hardware for combat in parts 1 and 2!
Star Castle Arcade: Play a classic arcade game adventure, with or without more features (like powerups)!
Playership Drones: Buy or restore exotic ships to command!

Other playable mods from 1.8 and 1.7, waiting to be updated...
Godmode v3 (WIP): Dev/cheat tool compatible with D&O parts 1 or 2.

Maybe add reward each achievment, like a lot of cred, few rins, or maybe an items.

I think that flat out adding a bonus to completing achievements isn't the way to go here. The game isn't so hard that it's really necessary, after all.

George seems to plan on unlocking playable ships through achievements, and I think that's a great idea. Let the unlocks make the game more interesting, rather than easier outright.

I suggesting that easier achievement should be rewarding a bonus that repeatable every game we play (like got free creds). So every we start a new game, the "Easy level" Achievement will reset.

Unlocking playership should be included in "hard" Achievement, it's permanent and cannot be reset except using another account.

"Genuine dreadnought killer" is a reference to Star Control, one of the inspirations for this game.

I do like your idea of having additional, higher levels of achievements. Completing an achievement again under certain(much harder) conditions could also be used to unlock different skins of ships, if achievements do end up being used for ship unlocks.

For example, a Centurion playership could be awarded for completing the militia mission set. A reskin of that ship with battle damage, a different paintjob, or military markings could be awarded for completing the militia mission set with the three main conducts(permadeath, no backtracking, no (i)nvoke powers), without failing a mission, and then bringing both Rama and Jenna past the Iocrym blockade and out of Human Space.

Something like that would give more hardcore players a goal to aim for, and significantly increase replay value.
