Normal Maps for Ships and Stations
First off, I don't really know how this works or if it's easy to implement for Transcendence, but I found this discussion about Normal Maps that looks really interesting. It seems to be able to give dynamic shading to ships and stations while taking little processing power. Of course, it'd require total rerendering and would just about double the total size of the image files, but it'd be a very cool aesthetic upgrade in my opinion.

It wouldn't be difficult to do - all we would have to do is bake the normals on the models.
The issue is that dynamic lighting is computationally expensive, but if we can get around that I do like the idea.
