Okay, so like, I made a few silly decisions in my current game, such as throwing away my dual flensers for a hanzo blaster on a ship using a 150NX reactor, and now my ship needs refueling every three minutes or so. I figured the next reactor up would probably come within a system or so, but like ten systems later and the first reactor I've seen since I got mine is just another 150NX, so I was hoping that there was some sort of special method to obtaining the next reactor in the line that I should know about to avoid the more likely conclusion that I've just been really, really unlucky.

Also, what is the point of doing missions for the Commonwealth military? I don't seem to recall being paid (could be wrong here) and the only tangible thing I got from it all was two medals which are currently just sitting in a box in my cargo hold. They also won't let me do any more missions.

Welcome to the forums, Rabbit!

Hi there Rabbit! Welcome to the forums! I hope you have a great time while you're here!

In answer to your question, the next reactor up should be a 250MW reactor - you should be able to get the upgrade when you find a Ringer Shipyard; but be prepared, as standard credits won't work with the Ringers, Teratons, or Taikons. Don't worry if you don't know about these alien races yet - they're half the fun of late-game Transcendence. Of course, if you have played to the end before you should know about this, but if you are having trouble with the Ringers, feel free to post elsewhere for help!

In answer to the question about the military - they won't pay you, but you will get access to Military grade weaponry and even some weapons that can't be found elsewhere; you'll get cool missions and mainly get a license to kill enemies during the missions (thus equally loads of loot).
In a way, the Military can be a waste of time - they require dedication are not a subsitute for good hard work. If you can't get more mission from a Fortress in one system, go to another one, or else start looking for CSC's -- they look like giant, four pointed stars and will be well protected.

Anything else I can help you with? :D

I think the point of the militia is to get A. the discounts in the armory, and B. to get the military I.D. to get to CSC's, which can install all but the last reactor and level 10 weaponry. If enough missions are done for them, you also get dock services free.

Thanks for the responses. I have encountered a Ringer shipyard, but I don't recall them having a reactor upgrade. Guess it wouldn't hurt to check again though.

It should just be under Dock Sevices, Upgrade Reactor. Failing that, check the actual store.

BTW, have you encountered one of those Commonwealth Place-Your-Order shops? If you haven't used up your order yet, punch in 250MW into the search box and see what it brings up.

Sorry, it was a Ringer Collective, not a Ringer shipyard, so it didn't have a dock option. I've encountered a few of those Corporate Trading Posts... and that's not actually a bad idea, I feel a little silly for not having thought of it. However, after a bit more searching I found a CSC willing to hook me up with a reactor so I'll just go with that option to avoid using up a trading post order.
Thanks again, though!

All right, a few things need to be said here.

First of all, CSC's, Ringer shipyards, and Blackmarket shipyards will install a better reactor through dock services than what you currently have installed. You may also find some for sale at Adventurers outfitters and Thor's wondrous devices. The SN2500 reactor and up are all military and can not be ordered at corporate stations.

Secondly, when a commonwealth militia station runs out of missions, it means that you have reached the highest rank you can reach through militia stations; you will not be able to get more missions at another militia station. Once you run out of missions at Militia stations, you need to start doing missions at the CSC's.

There are several rewards for doing commonwealth military missions. As you raise in rank, the militia stations will offer a significant discount on items in their armories, and once you reach the max rank, CSC's will offer all dock services for free.

There is also a late game mission that you can only get if you have reached the maximum military rank. The reward is well worth it, in my opinion.

EDIT: Even if the SN2500 wasn't military, searching "250MW" wouldn't get you squat.

You don't have to be the max rank for free dock services. You just have to be a fleet officer. Its the 2nd or 3rd I think.

I find that the CSC provides some of the best benefites for upgrades and rewards as you play it more.

Not to mention that they are able to defeat any single enemy (minus perhaps a xenophobe worldship, depending how many escorts it has.)

They also have some great loot if they happen to get struck down, such as Katana kannons, real cool items such as Recators and Blast Plate.

Yeah, once I saw a CSC near a stargate, where a Ventari colony kept calling reinforcements, which the CSC Destroyed. Each one took a few percents of its damage, until 45 Ventari and a CSC later, I loot enough to earn me around 2,000,000 in one system.

Ah! That's the thing! :D

Complete mental blank you know! Anyway, those places are gold if you get them -- buy you only get to use the Order function once in that system!. So don't waste it on 50 missiles you can buy elsewhere, use it selectively and it can save your game! (It really has saved my bacon more than once).
