First off, thanks for the fun game. I'm really enjoying the discovery process. I have been trying to just figure things out for myself, mostly, but have run up against a weird question.

On this, my twentieth game or something, I've finally managed to get a decent ship together. I cruise into a new star system, contact the local authorities and assist them in destroying everything red. At some point they tell me "everything's OK now", so I go around, kill everything else red in the system before moving on. I was gaining ranks every few missions and feeling like a real champ! Killing everything they needed killed and more.

Problem is, after I beat the arena and flew into the next system or so, found the next green fortress, it won't let me accept the militia missions anymore, the option to accept is grayed out leaving me only the decline. This is not the same as in a system where the people simply have no work for me, they are careful to only give one option. So, I'm thinking I am missing some sort of prerequisite to getting future militia missions, and it's sorta bugging the crap out of me why.

I'm sure you fellas have all the answers, so at long last I turn to you. How do I fulfill the requirement(s) to continue my rise in rank?

Best,
Zeb

You cannot get a higher militia rank than you have. That's why there are no more missions.

20 something game ? that was a long time ago for many players, which is a good thing because we know more that can help others :)
As for Rank, you can only get but so high in the Militia, then you have to go Fleet.... I think that is a little skewed because by the time the Fleet missions are up for taking you passed several systems worth of mission chances.......
I still think and always want more missions, personally, regardless of how high your rank is..
I also never liked the Legend level of Korolov : I think the cvhallenge is not being a Legend, it is staying one.

One thing I do not see is your mention of Korolov : Korolov missions are one of the requirements for command center / mission access :
the stations with missions are basically all the same in terms of what the mission target designs are, but sometimes there simply is nothing in the system that matches the code by station type or distances.
I once did a fleet with missions and ran into issues with the codes for the missions not activating ( such as destroying an Ares Station ) because the DISTANCE of the target / gates has alot to do with the activation of the missions themselves.

I have had many games where I can not get many missions, even Korolov can sometimes end up in a system with nothing to do and the 'Kill Mission of the Pirate Fortress is randomly given so there can and has been for me times where there was simply nothing out there.....but hopefully in those times the player takes the initiative and just goes Bonkers on everything to gain loot.

One little thing i notices within my first 100 games :
armed stations are a liability to themselves ( with the only usual exceptions of Adventure Outfitters and Ringers, but I have lost those stations some heavy action from Ares : I lost Ringer Shipyards to an Ares fleet chasing me several times).
Stations with a planet / asteroid big enough to park on near or next to them were virtually perfect cover, so long as you have the fuel to stay put until the station and it's defenders deal with the threat.
Flying Irresponsibly In Eridani......

I don't like to kill pirates in cold blood ..I do it.. but I don't like it..

Well, at least they salute me now, but I was hoping at some point for a discount on fuel or something. I'll go ahead and defeat their enemies anyway, to be nice. 'Cause that's the kind of captain I am. I like to finish things off before moving on to the next gate. So, I just keep killing like this until I find a system/station/fortress that wants my help again?

I had originally been playing permadeath hence my high number of restarts. I didn't realize, for a couple days, that you could resurrect. So, for this ship I've used that rez feature several times in order to continue my learning progress... although it feels a little dirty to click the button.

Fun game, mostly. The gear is a little confusing, at first. Like everything good in this world, you must first develop a taste for something before you can completely enjoy it, right?

Militia only discounts most of what is sold in their armory as you rise in rank. The Commonwealth Fleet, which is separate from the Militia, have their distinct rewards for high ranking officers.

I didn't realize they were separate entities. I have already done missions for the commonwealth, from their fortresses, and those are the missions that I can't seem to "accept".

How many different ranking systems are there in the game? I remember completing the first system with a pretty straightforward mission, then there were some trading post escorts, then some militia missions from the giant toroid space station thingie, now I find these commonweath fortresses... are all of these giving me perks for different people? I thought it was all interconnected somehow.

Commonwealth Fleet is usually found late in the game, beginning at systems near Jiang's Star, Eta Ceti, and beyond. You will find huge ships that look like a cross between an aircraft carrier and a Cylon basestar. Dock with one of them, and you will see for yourself. Some of them offer missions -- you will know what to do. Others are hospitals. (Tip: If your fleet rank is low, it is a good idea to donate what the doctor needs.)
