Biggest initial hurdles?
It wasn't really a hurdle but I can agree that the stations run out of cash kinda quick. All you have to do is wait while they get some more though. They're always getting more from normal business.

Haven't gone through the whole thread yet (and hoping it dosen't become an argument about enforced permadeath >_>), but I think what made me drop the game the first time I tried it (.98-9 something, not sure) was hating the inventory system. On top of not being able to hit stuff very well in the beginning perhaps. But mainly I remember hating the inventory system.
I guess I got used to it? *shrug*

Was there an early early version where you could only buy fuel rods, and not directly refuel? I have vague memories of having fuel problems of a "there's no more fuel to buy anywhere" type rather than an "I cant afford it" type on my first few attempts. Then trying again in a later version with no problems at all.
Being unable to kill anything with any weapon other than a Raisermesser Smartcannon.

Oh yeah and being unable to use the lower level fuel rods in upgraded reactors was basically a gamender for me.

My biggest initial hurdle was not understanding what to do and then getting as far as the Dwarg. Once I hit them, I died, every single time. It wasn't till one of the utf members gave me an extension to weaken the dwarg I was finally able to play and complete the game.

Uninstall the reactor, then buy and install a less powerful reactor.
