Well, the topic pretty much says it. Right now I am at a stage, where the Ranx dreadnoughts are hard to kill. They take me a lot of time and fuel - more fuel than I can get off their wrecks. My ship is a Wolfen, the main weapon is an omni TeV9 blaster, the other weapon used to be a +20% Mark III howitzer, now I changed that to a Fusionfire howitzer. There is no rocket launcher installed, instead I have an ICX missile defense turret.
Now, my current tactics is to pound the dreadnoughts with the omni blaster from far away - from 70 to 90 units of distance. However, since the dreadnought has some particle-immune armor, this approach takes a lot of time. And if I get closer, say at about 50-60 units, it starts firing its Kiloton cannon at me. And having a damaged ICX turret doesn't help.
After getting back to "earlier" systems, where I bought the Fusionfire and got a new ICX turret, I am thinking if I could change the tactics. If the dreadnought has limited ammo, I could hover at a distance of about 50, draw its Kiloton cannon fire and leave the ICX to destroy the shells (in the meantime showering it with the omni TeV9). Once the dreadnought is out of shells, I can close in and start shooting at it with the Fusionfire. Having a 700 hp/100MW Mammoth shield, I believe I will be able to withstand whatever close range weapons the dreadnought has. Naturally, this whole course of action depends crucially on the premise that the dreadnought will run out of ammo. And hence the question - will it?
Do the bad guys run out of ammo?
I don't know, but if it does, it takes a very long time. I wouldn't bother.
my recomendation is to get close. I think the ranx shells still have a "safe distance" from the ship before they explode, so if you get close the cluster effect won't work.

Yes...they run out of ammo. Think of le cruiser expoit. It probably takes a long time. And i'm not giving out any spoilers.

Agreed, they can run out of ammo, but it could take a very long time considering that it's possible for them to carry up to 240 Kiloton shells. Although that is rare, still possible and I wouldn't want to play around with those beasts just to get them to run out of ammo.
Of all the weapons (that don't require ammo) I've tried on those `Noughts, I've found that an Ion cannon works pretty good but takes a while. Another is to use a Kiloton cannon if you have room to carry those heavy shells. You'll need quite a few.

Guess what i found that works good on them? On a modded game, the quantium disintergrater takes em out in one hit, while in an unmodded game, I use the all famous weapon, the *bows down* QAC!

I remember they changed the ares tundra class for this specific topic. It would run out of micronukes and be unarmed. Now it has the micronukes AND a lightning cannon. Plus I think they got better shields from .95 or .96.
