Can you get new ships?

after selecting one of the three starter ships, is it possible to get a different ship later in the game?

you can make or get someone to make you a mod that allows you to play a different ship in the beginning.

You can easily down-grade items on a ship in a mod so to keep it balanced in the beginning of the game. If you're wanting a Ronin because of its looks, a mod would be best since the ship is equipped fairly weak a side from the Ronin C, which has a particle cannon.

yeah, but that ruins the point! it would be cool to be able to go to a shipyard and buy a new ship for some phenomenal amount of money.
