Portable Analyzer & others

Hi all. Some newb questions:

1. I've searched the forum and tried everything I can in-game. Do you need to actively do something with a Portable Analyzer or will it work by itself just having it in the cargo hold?

2. How do I use a Laser Amplifier to upgrade a laser weapon?

3. How do I install a ROM?

I have tried at every landing place in the starting star system and found no place that will install or help use these items. My search for the answers has included these sites... maybe I'm just missing something obvious?

It is a pretty obvious thing, but it's easy enough to miss. Push the key, and pick the item you want to use from the item picker (arrow keys + enter). The item analyser will launch a dockscreen where you can use it (as will barrels), roms apply themselves automatically, and weapon upgrades like the amplifier will affect your currently selected primary weapon (so don't use them when you've got a non-laser weapon selected).

Keep in mind that not all usable items are good for you, as well. The analyser will help with that.
