Mining

What is the process for mining exactly? I had a ship equipped with a mining laser and unleashed it on various rocks, but nothing worthwhile happened.

Can you only mine certain rocks? Which ones? How long does it take?

Keep trying, not every rock has ore. If after a few hits from the mining laser, nothing comes out, move on the the next rock.

Try and hit from a couple different angles, also. Don't spread the beam, either. Try and keep all four segments hitting in the same spot.
