It creates a complete map of all the regions you have explored in a 6200x6200 pixel image. However, it is extremely CPU intensive, so you'll need to use a reasonable powerful computer to generate it.
The top left is in quite some chaos at the moment. If ruler of "Sentient Core" reads this, let your hatred "burn forever with the heat of a thousand suns". I saw two empires eliminated and a capital spring up beside mine. I pay attention to the map. Now I need to get rid of those planets.

The empire name is Dogeland. Sentient Core was 3rd largest in terms of planets with a 156 rating compared to me. Part of his fleet had defected to me by the time he logged on. So my ship count probably increased from that war.

Haha, I had one of my infantry academy worlds rebel on me. When I logged in the rebels had already accumulated a force that was more than 2000 in rating. Putting down this rebellion ended up wiping out almost a quarter of all my exotroops.
Btw, I destroyed those planetary defenses for you.
I was reading through this slightly old thread and noticed the contrast between the last posted image of the Galaxy from almost 100 cycles ago. Just look at how much free space there was compared to the present! And the "Great Powers" would barely be considered mid level today. Things really are getting crowded, I'd lay money that another Galactic War is on the horizon. Here's a (not great quality, but I got it in one image) pic of the current map, as of Cycle 4360:
