What I mean when I say broadside, say your ship is positioned facing directly to the right at 90° The enemy is facing directly at you at 180° and fires his laser point blank into your armor. With laser reflective coating, the laser shot would either have to penetrate the armor or ricochet directly back at the enemy.
Now I don't know if that was the case in game, but I had armor that was laser vulnerable with laser reflective coating applied to each segment and the laser fire damaged my armor.
