Hi Kaama, hi all,

I should mention here a series of two Star Wars space shooters developped in VB with the TrueVision 3D Engine by Bruno R. Marcos, aka Bruneras and called Battle of Yavin (BoY) and Battle of Endor (BoE). They render well the great ambiance of the movies, with hundreds of TIE flying around and your ships depleting (not so) slowly.

Sidescrolling shooters:

Recently I've been captured by Daniel's games. All of them are freeware made with gamemaker, and are very retro (and very cool, well, I'm a retrogamer... )
http://www.remar.se/daniel/

In particular Iji has a incredibly addicting story, awesome sprites and beautiful music. Unlockables, secrects and speedrun make the game replayable too.

Another sidescrolling shooter (well, not another, probably the best freeware SSS)
Cave Story is a must.

FPP (first person puzzle ? :) )
Have you enjoyed playing Portal ?
Why not trying its predecessor ? Narbacular Drops ! Freeware and with a community still making great levels.

I really enjoyed portal. Completely beat it, achievements and all. I think I'll give Narbacular drop a try after final exams are done.

Desktop Tower Defense. Its an online flash tower defense game(at least, I think its flash, not too sure about that). The nice thing about this one is that you can create the path that the "creeps" must follow. The thing I like best about this game is that there is very little downtime. If you aren't managing your resources every several seconds, you die.

Ancient Domains Of Mystery (ADOM) is my favorite roguelike. This one features a nice, full storyline although you are free to ignore most of it. You tend to die early on in ADOM, so it might be a bit frustrating from some (unless you save-scum), but it makes the satisfaction of beating the game even more rewarding.

BZFlag, a tank shooting game that you should know about.

Solar Wolf. An arcade game based on Solar Fox (except solar wolf is much, much better). The idea is to collect all of the "power cubes" without getting hit by spike mines or asteroids. Oh, you're being shot at the entire time by "guardians" who's fireball-like rockets will also kill you. Great game. My personal best is all ~50 levels in 13 lives.

I've recently ran across Tremulous, an open-source FPS. It is an asymmetric game humans vs aliens. The humans have long-range guns (what a shock), while the aliens have maneuverability and melee attacks.

I was interested too in free FPS recently and I tried Tremulous.

Soldier Front is a Counterstrike-like FPS with a couple of nice ideas, but it lacks some contents: maps for example are quite limited. Also it's "poisoned" by the I j j I game system, you cannot even ALT-TAB, the game self shut down to prevent cheating. THey are the same guys that offered games like Gunz and Gunster (free online games too)

Foldit: it's a scientific puzzle game, you get to fold the secondary structure of proteins! It has nice FX and an online only point system. Quite cool, sometimes it really looks like i'm using PyMol :D (pymol is a real scientific software for protein structure viewing)
The authors of the game thinks of using game results to improve the algorithms of projects like Rosetta@home

The Marathon Trilogy is open source freeware now. I'l get a link in a minute.

http://trilogyrelease.bungie.org/

http://source.bungie.org/

The first link is for the games themselves, the second is a derivative that makes it run on windows an linux. You'll still need the game files from the original though, and there's problems with Marathon 1 compatibilty so I suppose I'l post the M1A1 link too... Never mind, they allready have it.
[schilcote] It doesn't have to be good, it just has to not be "wow is that the only thing you could think of" bad

I've been playing that for years now. Not too much on the server, but have a local group that gets together to play.

Ultima Underworld, The Stygian Abyss
Ultima Underworld II, Labyrinth of Worlds
Great 1st person dungeon crawlers. The graphics are only enough to make the game playable; but the story line and gameplay are outstanding.
* WARNING * Very addictive, if you like 1st person RPGs. :P

I'm not sure Abandonia is legal. Well, they're legal where they're located, but I think U.S. copyright law is more repressive then EU so in some cases it may not be legal to download stuff by U.S. companies if you're in the U.S. I don't think anyone cares because they don't make available anything that is still for sale to be in compliance with EU law, but it's something to be aware of.

That aside I hated ultima underworld. The graphics were just ambitious enough to call out the limitations of the hardware it was designed for and the interface was clumsy and invasive. I might try a remake if someone made one for a free engine, but the original committed the unforgivable sin of being too ambitious for the technology.
