Space combat, simulation of flight, trading et al. What other space games do you play?

I'm looking for something new, I've only really played FreeSpace 2 (and innumerable others built on its engine), but I'm really looking for something free form. I've heard that the X-series combines a lot of what I've mentioned above, but surely there's more than just one lot of games out there that are like that right?

Can anyone suggest some games that I might be interested in?
Or just general chit-chat about space games broadly. =P

Escape Velocity Nova: The combat is very similar to Transcendence, but trading and outfitting is handled very differently. The best part is that it is a shareware game. So you can try it out to see if you like it before you buy it.

NAEV: It's pretty much a clone of the Escape Velocity series. It handles many things better than the EV games, in my opinion, but it is currently unfinished, so there isn't much to do.

Vega Strike: More or less in the same vein as the rest of the games mentioned here. It's been several years since I last tried it, and I remember it being a little rough around the edges.

Ascii Sector A rougelike version of the original privateer game, the one that started it all. :o

Prospector Another space exploration roguelike, it's very much in the style of the original Stak Trek. Most of the activity in the game is landing on planets and seeking out biodata and exploring. Your health in the planet is measured in "redshirts" :).

Regardless, I would heartily recommend the X series. I've put hundreds of hours into those games, and I consider them some of the best games I've ever played.

Ugh, roguelikes and the wing-commander universe - not for me, at least not what I'm after at the moment. Played ASCII Sector and Prospector to death, they're great fun, but as mentioned, not really what I'm after at this time. I played Vega Strike some months back, but it felt really crude. I didn't like Vega Strike at all.

However these two sound quite some interesting. Definitely going to try these two out. Thanks for the info Curudan. ^_^

I started playing EVE online two weeks ago.

So far, it's great fun. Endless ways of building/outfitting your ship, but I guess unless you're into PvP, it will get boring at some point. Haven't reached that point yet though.

I forgot to mention Freelancer. It's essentially a remake of Privateer. I played it a long time ago, and it really wasn't all that great.

I wouldn't have mentioned it at all, but several years ago, the Discovery mod was released. Calling it a mod is almost doing it a disservice, in my opinion. Read the page and you'll see what I mean. :)

Discovery freelance even supports free online play; they frequently have more than 100 players on at any one time.

X-Terran Conflict is fantastic. The other X-games are quite hardcore (mainly in the control side of things) and TC fixes it all.
Mind you, people are right when they say the X-series is hardcore -- mainly the game focuses on trading goods around the massive universe, then getting a bigger ship, then having multiple other ships that trade for you, then creating a business enterprise on only then when you have millions and millions of credits can make a ship army and blow the sh*t outta everyone who gave you bad prices early game. :)

Don't buy the X-games thinking it's a great shoot-em-up genre -- it's much more of a trading sim. It's fun, but it will take a while before you see the fruits of your success.

I'm working on a game right now. Of course, knowing me it'll never be finished.

The basic idea (or at least A basic idea) was that it'd be a cross between Masters Of Orion and Escape Velocity (Ever played Star Trek: Broken Mirror?) except on an online server. I'm really not sure how much of that will actually happen yet, but who knows, the end result might just be something interesting.

I think we all know how I feel about /those/ by now...

Anyways, I started working on a game of my own; not much detail on it yet, but in a couple months, you should see some of the main ships (right now I'm working on the playable craft, since these will take the greatest deal of work) - capships will also need a good amount of texture work, but the shapes for the enemy capships happen to be nice and geometrical, so I don't need to worry too much about them. Other generic fighters and small craft and stuff won't need that much, because they will be small and fairly simple.

I'm hoping on recruiting some help down the line, once I have some models made, to start working on the game's engine (especially the graphics part)...

Its got some definite inspiration from starfox 64, and a bit from some other games, but is certainly still its own distinct game.
