Well, judging by your join date, you are at least a relatively new account. :D

I asked this on a thread a while back. The answer? SPAM bots.

You see, Trans doesn't use a good enough encryption for accepting new accounts. Any viral 'bot' can just fill out the forms with random names (like XADFULL etc) and then submit it.

However, the account isn't registered until you email George, thus activating the account and allowing you to then post. This isn't however, made clear during the sign-up, causing a little frustration.

At my last count, there are perhaps 300 regestered accounts (based on 1 or more post).

The other ~17,000+ accounts are all spambots.

I don't think they're all spambots. Many must be like I was.

I have played this game since 2006, signed up for the forums shortly after, and never got registered until 2008...

Well, according to alterecco (look down the page), a good deal of them are fakes.

Some (or most) of the real accounts may just be very inactive.

NO

The reason that there are no new accounts is that Transcendence is a boring game. Or maybe no one wants to wait a year to join like I did (or was that fixed?).
[schilcote] It doesn't have to be good, it just has to not be "wow is that the only thing you could think of" bad

well, I'm really sorry for that, I really hope that they are all spambots. Admins are trying hard to check all the registrations.
As an admin, if somebody wants to take part of the community, I'm supposed to try as hard as possible to make it happen.

To be fair, I didn't push too hard until I wanted to register the UNID I always used to tweak my game.

Since becoming an admin this summer, I make a monthly sweep through the backlog of registered users, seraching for potential valid users, stop by UTF every now and then to check for lost newbies, patrol IRC for newcomers who may need an account/account activation, and have a link to an email account I set for the purpose of letting people notify me that they registered and need an account activation.

considering that my posts constitute a significant portion of the overall posts on the forum, let alone the recent posts, I think its safe to say that the link in my sig gets fairly good coverage, and has in itself helped activation figures by about 20-40%.
And overall, since being promoted, active user numbers have spiked significantly.

I would venture so far as to guess that 1 in every 300 registrations is a legitimate user.

Umm, also wanted to point out that it seems that the ratio is closer to 1:200, which is actually... not that bad.
Consider there are about 80 registrations a day, that means that there are a couple new activations per week.
(I am going through the memberlist ahead of schedule. I'll be activating some more users when I get home)

Also wanted to point out that since october, when I last checked, there were 280 users that had ever posted anything.
Now there are 330: that is a 50 user increase! (about +18%)

That is a significant increase, considering that the forums have been here since 2006, making them 5 years old now (well, assuming that we are in 2011, since its just over a week away.), and so that 3 month period since I last checked would be 5% of the time the forum has been around: this is thus a MASSIVE spike in the active user count.
