Hi, I was just looking to get some community input on what people think will be good "prestige membergroups" - membergroups that are designed to show the contributions made by a user.

Originally the Tinker group was going to be used for one of these, but we decided against it, for it would likely cause confusion, as prestige membergroups do not moderate anything.

There will be a MOTM membergroup for the current (and maybe past) winners of MOTM.

I don't get what 'staff' is for, as only Prophet is in that group. Also, 'developers' is a bit odd. I didn't know gambitdash was a developer, and shouldn't it be just George in that group? :?

Otherwise I think it's all OK, but I was just a bit confused on Staff and Developer groups.

Gambit has access to the source code, as he is doing the linux & mac port.

Staff includes non-moderators & people who have staff privs. However, we are currently working on re-organizing positions, so just ignore it for the moment.

I'm the assistant to the regional manager of the OTF...

Or, if you're not a fan of The Office, here's some other, equally descriptive titles:
  • Administrative Assistant (that's worth a few flames)
    Information Documentation Clarification Designer
    Director of Customer Communications Publications
Senior Lead Engineering Department Spell Checker-Editor and Formatter
    Managing Director of Information Dissemination
    Product Documentation Developer
That guy/girl in the really small cube who knows FrameMaker cold
    Desktop Publisher
Headhunter (oops, that one slipped in)
Information and Product Documentation Dude (or Dudette)
Information Architect I like the sound of this one
    Engineering School Dropout
    User Documentation Specialist
    QA Support Writer
    Customer Support Writer
    Engineering Department Writer
Stolen from here

Basically, it's an honorific title that doesn't REALLY mean anything yet. We're still brainstorming about what all these groups are going to do/be.
Coming soon: The Syrtian War adventure mod!

I think we should group them by official rank, and then group them have sub groups for transcendence themed names.
Also we should possibly consider adding IRC Staff to the ranks as well.

I would like to see some kind of half-yearly, or yearly election, where the community gets to elect a member of the community to some kind of notable rank - call it, "Elected Member".

These members get no rights to moderate, or perform admin tasks, but it shows that they are respected within the community. Sort of like...what do they call it....dem...democ...wait I'll think of it....democra...oh I remember - Democracy. :P

From Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
King Arthur: I am your king.
Peasant Woman: Well, I didn't vote for you.
King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?
[Angelic music plays... ]
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
Dennis the Peasant: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis the Peasant: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
^ I just put that in for fun.

In any case, Dennis the Peasant has a point, and all though the Community may not elect Admins, we should at least, all get to vote and say who in teh community is 'notable', or 'helpful' and who is respected.

Sounds a lot like the karma rating that the simple machines forum has built in. :)

I'm not sure if thats totally fair though for certain users who are not able to post regularly on the forums, and I'm not sure if it will promote sensible discussion on par with what a forum should be.

I was slightly more regularly, such as twice a year, or four times a year - and once you get voted as a Notable Member, you will lose that membership by the next vote. So, in that way, if people vote in, say...me, for instance, and then everyone realises that I'm a idiot and don't deserve the title, well then I'll end up losing my title at the next vote and probably won't get voted in again.

To prevent against that though, I would suggest each election comes out with two winners -- that way, even if one Notable Member turns out to be a dud, the other guy will still be helpful.

The goal is really just to reflect within the community who we respect and trust. For instance, we regular users have no reason to trust an admin or moderator when they speak - but we do, because you have been elected, and thus it is understood that you are smarter, wiser and better than the rest of us. But how do we know that?
But, if you have a Notable Member group, regular users know that 'CoolDudeXYZ' must be a reliable person, because the community voted him as being respected.

Furthermore, due to the 4-times-a-year cycle, and the fact that you lose your membership come the next vote, new people can get elected - or re-elected -, so the community shifts with whom it thinks is respectable. For instance, if someone is a constant help around the shipyard, constantly helps when people raise questions, issues, etc, then they would most likely get elected as a Notable Member. And a Notable Member may well end up being an admin anyway - and thus proves that Admins and Mods are deserving of their status.

But, if it's all going to be too hard to arrange, I suppose we could go without it - but seeing as we FINALLY have a proper forum capable of holding a poll, it might just be feasible.

So you are proposing people get cycled as moderators and admins? I think its interesting, but a lot of work, plus, many people who have higher ranks have contributed to the community. So if your looking for your 'reward' don't fret, you'll get it. Most of us have been here three years or more before we got any recognition for anything we did. I don't particularly like classing whos smarter then the rest of us. The entire goal of this community is to have fun and I hope that everyone is equal with intelligence. I'm plain dumb when it comes to programming in lisp, and its quite obvious who is good at it by the help they provide and the mods - something that can be easily seen by looking at any number of forums. I don't disagree we can have special ranks that are voted in, but I don't agree it should be used to identify that - just something fun. I mean this is a game!
