"FreeCol is a turn-based strategy game based on the old game Colonization, and similar to Civilization. The objective of the game is to create an independent nation.
You start with only a few colonists defying the stormy seas in their search for new land. Will you guide them on the Colonization of a New World?"

form the website :D

I found it on sourceforge, tried it, and couldn't make it do anything.

Play Dwarf Fortress.
[schilcote] It doesn't have to be good, it just has to not be "wow is that the only thing you could think of" bad

FreeCol and Free Civ both came with some software that I purchased.

In FreeCol, you choose what nation you will represent, and sail your ship to the New World in a turn-based game. Colonial - period, Pre - Revulutionary War period.

In FreeCiv, it is as has been described: a take on Civilization. I played both, and found that each one took a large chunk of system resources to run. My present computer is fast (2.98 gig processor; 2 gig of high performance dual channel ram), but each of these games took a long time to load, and to play.

In my estimation, it would be more worthwhile to spend the $10.21 (price + tax in my state) to purchase the "Age of Empires Gold Edition" from Walmart, or the "Rise of Nations" series, and play them.

Yeah, if you're paying more than the ten cents at most that the media costs you're paying too much, and even that's too much unless you live in a country with government monopoly broadband.
