Upgrade forum software? (SMF/PHPBB3)

Post by Wolfy » Sun Apr 11, 2010 10:56 pm

Who'd want to upgrade?
(Yay/nay)
I vote 'yay' because the phpbb2 boards have been giving me so many problems over the last several years... (this one in particular)

Oh, and FYI to people who don't know:
PHPBB3 upgrade from PHPBB2 will retain all posts and users, so don't worry about that [gpg's forums were just upgraded in this manner]

Actually, I think that SMF would be optimal (I have experience with both SMF and phpbb3), and if I read ttech's comment right, I think it's possible (with his archiver) to retain all posts and users and everything in the conversion to SMF.

So the options are now:

SMF1.1
SMF2.0
PHPBB3
or stay at PHPBB2

I'd just as soon see George put his effort into the game instead of upgrading the forums.

Forum upgrade shouldn't involve much effort... one, maybe two hours tops.

In all likelyhood, it would probably be done in less.
If he let's Ttech do the upgrading (if it's SMF anyways), it would be done without any real time expendatures from george himself.

Seriously though; the problems to the OTF can get extremely obstructive to commmunity participation.

The only thing that *really* needs an upgrade imo is registering. Some real bot deterrents, and fast registration for humans are in order. At this point I think a large part of the ppl new to Transcendence never end up on the forums, simply because their accounts get lost in bot spam (and don't bother/find out about the workarounds)

As for the rest of the problems, they are annoying at times, but not really critical imo.

SMF and phpbb3 have far better bot countermeasures

Blech.

I'd rather have PHPBB. Hell, I'd rather have WebBBS 5 than SMF. Mainly because it's glitchy, and also because it's ugly as crap. And yeah, I know Perculi's and the Bay12 forums run on it. Maybe I'm just biased by the first SMF forum I'd seen. I dunno. Still, I'd prefer other systems.

What I'd suggest is Invision ProBoards. It's awesome. It's the best looking software I've seen, and I've noticed that it never glitches up like other forum systems do. I'm not completely sure if its free though...

IPB sucks. Why? you have to pay for it. :P
so... NO.

The old versions of SMF were glitchy, but that's because of the original software it was derived from. It's been vastly improved since then.

Personally, I don't like most standard-default themes; I prefer the darker themes, as they arn't so blindingly bright and hurt my eyes.

For what it's worth, I love SMF. My first exposure to SMF was the B12 forums, and they have always been stable as a rock for me.

I definitely prefer SMF over PHPBB. but I'm not sure if it might be easier for George to upgrade instead of switching software. Regardless, something to get rid of the requirement for George to approve accounts is a necessity. I think that we end up missing out on a lot of valuable contributors who are turned away by the that.

My personal choice would be FluxBB.... simple, fast no-nonsense... what more can a man want. For an example of a large forum that runs FluxBB have a look at http://bbs.archlinux.org

Just a reminder:
Before posting non-phpbb forum software, make sure that there is an archiver compatible for this job: phpbb2 -> your suggested software
We don't want to change over... to realize we've lost all the user accounts and posts

Most likely. I attempted to register using another email account and it never got a reply.

In fact it was merely an accident that I found your post here (I searched for 'Weapons Upgrade' which this thread was one of many with 'upgrade' in it) to get the the 'clue' as to how to speed up the process, I still waited 2-3 days.

The Unofficial Site no one seems to go to very often. One guy posted a month prior to my getting there with no replies or other activity.

Between the two forums, the out of date information (going back to previous Versions) the dead link for the 'Library', I came to think that maybe Transcendence was a 'dead' project and nearly gave up the game.
