So, in just over a month of being on the forums, I've noticed something -- George only ever responds to threads where his own name has been mentioned.

Further more, it is even possible to attract his attention by using his name in a thread. Eg, *Pokes George*

Coincidence? :?

Really?

I have... not noticed this. Probably since it really is just a pattern in the last couple months, given that as of late, he seems to have been rather busy.

Well, in my experience, if you ask a question, and direct it to George, it is very likely to be answered (if he is the only one who knows the answer). This leads me to believe the George, indeed, is everywhere at once, just like the other big G's

I have been rather busy lately. Partly that is because of work.

But partly, it is because I have been working on Part II of Transcendence. I don't have anything to show yet (and won't for a while), but I have been making slow and steady progress.

Meanwhile, I plan on reserving time before the end of the year to work on and release 1.04. The Bug Trac database is the best place to see what I'm planning to work on.

I presume this is that slow and laborious stage when you are making content to begin populating the game world to make it playable with stuff to explore and do, at least a good enough amount to make it a good game, even if it isn't as fleshed out as the final product should be?

Exactly. I am working on both new game mechanics and on new content (alien races, ships, stations, etc.) For example, I'm working up some of the background and backstory for the alien races that the player will encounter.

:D It might be slow and laborious, but (at least IMO), its one of my favorite parts of the whole process.

Agreed! Definitely one of my favorite parts too.

One thing I've learned as a game designer, however, is to work on the game mechanics along with the background. If you work on the background first and then try to add game mechanics on top, you often end up with an unbalanced game or (worse) a boring game.

On the other hand, working on game mechanics first sometimes leads to shallow or uncompelling background stories.

In practice (for Part II), that means understanding how each alien race fits in to the game in addition to understanding how they fit in the story. Just as there has to be a diversity of backstories (you can't have every alien race be an evil empire bent on conquering everything) you need a diversity of game mechanics (every alien race should present a different challenge to the player).

Of course, that's usually pretty hard, particularly with lots of enemies. And I haven't always done a great job at it in Part I. But it's a great goal to have.

George have you seen my mod, Hell's Trinity?

I thought you'd like to see it, because it's an adventure extension and there aren't that many out there at the moment -- the only ones I really know of just increase the game by extra systems, but my mod is an actual new game, using the Ares.

I have a thread around here somewhere....

Yes! I just checked it out today and it's pretty cool. I like the three different systems.
