 I just use the default text editor, personally — gedit for Ubuntu, xed for Mint — and set the highlight mode to XML. There’s also an option to highlight matching brackets/parentheses in both.

 I’ve run into it before, it’s a font issue. The game advances the cursor by specific amount based on how many characters have been typed (based on the assumption that the font required is monospace), but if you don’t have the necessary font, it doesn’t line up correctly.  Any item with a “Domina Communion” label will do the trick, though they’re harder to come by in the early going. It’s hard to really get started on building up your powers until you can start handing slave coffins over.  You don’t need to complete the Arena to be eligible for military missions, tho...

 Talk to Digdug, he maintains an archive of all previous versions of the game. (Also I may dig into some of the original post when I get something vaguely resembling a shred of motivation; it has some good points in it that I kinda want to poke at.)
