I don't use ammo weapons in the game for one reason - the total ammunition in the game is limited. One way to fix this would have been to introduce restocking in stations. How often would you check? if you have a long ship with a thin profile, it is possible for a weapon to miss the leading edge, but hit the ship somewhere in the middle. It should be. Maybe, the ship could be divided into sections and all the parts which are in the part of the blast would be checked....

Its really not that hard to take them out. Its got an omni turbolaser. I don't find them any more dangerous than Vikings. What bugs me is that they take SO LONG to kill. 36 armor sections and 80hp each. I end up getting frustrated and start doing suicidal runs. They usually work.... i mean the suici...
