The current stable version is a fine game. If u try a new one, go El500 class freighter, and stick to omni weapons. ( omni laser -> omni particle -> omni ion ) Also deactivate (hotkey B) your shield straight at start, and even unequip your shield and sell it (fuel wise). This should help greatly for...

Quite alot more is possible whit reactors. Adding missions without addressing what makes current mining an unpleasant experience will not make them more fun. If not, u can get one in St. kat, or buy one at a drone shop.
Regular system maps also show u the stargates, not sure about military system maps tho.....

So far there are a lot of good idea's on this forum, some of which describe a similar way of what u suggested. The regional or linear progression ''break'' would require backtracking.
