That actually makes a lot of sense. The "guard from hostiles" directive must take precedence over the allied status because the station is an enemy faction to start with and then the accidental attack on the station sets off a retaliation.

Tinker build suggestion.

I have just one at the moment, but maybe there are others that some people have. I'd like to see the ability to take the standard Helium fuel rods converted into a Reactor Assembly (maybe like 8 rods = 1 assembly).

Commonwealth station had 3 types of ROM: Shield enhancement, targeting and visual display enhancement.
That's the first time I had such good ROMs right off the bat.

I believe George once mentioned that there is a random value (destiny or something like that) that is only rolled once per new game. Maybe that could be used to implement what you're suggesting.

Why not just implement it into the "w' key? So you cycle through weapons as well as weapon + ammotypes for primary weapons.
I would expect this to be a feature for post-1.0 versions though.

I know that the Heliotrope rods can boost your reactor output, but I'm not sure if it increases your fuel capacity as well. I was thinking about a couple of upgrade items that specifically boost either your fuel capacity or your power output.

I think the system now is appropriate for the game mechanics and encourages the player to replay the game and discover new trade routes as they become more familiar with it. I like that you can make some profit from buying goods at one place and sell somewhere else, but unless you have a good memory or write down the purchase price when you buy goods, it's hard to tell where you should sell to make a profit.
