I had an idea to consider for future versions. There could me certain places (ringers or some post-Heretic race) that allow you to make some ship upgrades permanent and do not use up a device slot. This would apply to stackable items such as ICX and patch spiders/arms. It should not apply to shields...

I really like that idea as a new race. The capships send out a small fleet of unarmed scavenger drones that loot wrecks for weapons and defenses and then bring them back to the capship to arm whatever is useful

It would be interesting to add a random chance (maybe like 10% per occurance) that a generated capship has some experimental upgrade such as ion reflection shields or an archcannon added. Wouldn't it be a nasty surprise to come across a Dreadnaught with an Omni ares archcannon added to it? :shock:

I could be wrong, but I think Ringers are currently the only ones able to install a device of that level. Besides, there is no ammo available in the game for the Kyrtin launcher yet anyways.

I fail to see the problem with having capships do double-duty as carriers. Granted, the context is different, but it works for the Star Destroyers in Star Wars right?

It *COULD* be done, but would require either using a Hex editor with some knowledge of the file structure, or using a tailor-made savegame editor which does not yet exist to my knowledge.
