It's interesting, the adverse reactions to a paid Part II. In absolute terms, a few dollars is a token fee, but it seems the bitterness of a broken promise makes things all the more sharper.

Perhaps these sentiments would be different if Part II were to be developed from community fundraising, rather than sold as a commodity.

@ Jay2Jay why would you ever have a pagefile larger than your installed RAM?
I don't see why larger size will help you at all unless you have RAID 0 or RAID 1+0 on your HDD/SSD

Just my two cents:

I found this game somewhere on the web and I have been playing it since 0.8 I think.

The thing is: It has always been a good example of a good, free, graphical roguelike game and nearly every article and forum post I can find that dates back to 2007-2009 says something like: "Hey guys, check this space-roguelike!" It is cool and it`s free too!". The problem is that George is entitled to being paid for his work, but I think that a huge number of players consists of those who came from the web, following those links from the forums. The things might have been completely different in a universe where Transcendence is not a free and open-source game.

BUT. I think George is entitled to be paid not only because he spends his time on this game, but because he has been developing it for having fun in the first place, not money. That`s the only game I have been downloading and re-downloading on a regular basis since those old versions.

I forgot to note, that additional paid content seems to solve that problem with a decision of bying/downloading a pirated copy, just look at all those F2P MMOs with additional paid stuff. The authors don`t seem to de starving, judging by the sheer numbers of the F2P-with-donate games.

Please note, that I am from Russia and the situation with copyright here is a bit different (Computer piracy, you know) so it is very hard to get rid of the old habits of using cracked software. Free and open source stuff like Transcendence or official Russian versions of proprietary software (that are significantly cheaper than western ones but are only for use in Russia) help but we still have a long way ahead of us.

BTW, which way to the donate button? And yeah, I beg your pardon if the stuff above offends you in any way, I am still not sure why I am writing this.

Dmitry:
Your post was thoughtful and had valuable opinions. I'm not offended at all.
Here's the donate link. As with everything in Transcendence I had to do a little bit of digging.

So Dimitry, tell me, since I shall now be moving to Russia, where should I go? Moscow, St. Petersburg? Any recommendations?

Just another suggestion:
add the donate button to the forums, in a hard to miss location.
The community is most active on these forums, so the donate button should be here to.

That usually depends on the software.

E.g. Some publishers on steam sell a game for 50 EUR in Europe and only 10 EUR in Russia.
Other publishers just do not seem to grasp the idea that selling 10 000 copies for 10 Euros is better than selling 1000 copies for 50 Euros.

And there's a version of Win8 that costs 50 EUR, it's full, but it's only for Russia and in tge Russian language.

And i do not reccomend going here just because of the cheaper software - property prices are higher than mt. Everest (rent is also huge), but the salaries are not on the same level with the prices. And since the Moscow mayor recently decided that cheaper housing will make matters worse, I don't even want to think what is going to happen in the future.

Yeah, and the climate sucks, -25 C in winter and +35 in summer, WTH?

Let's stop this stuff anyway, i had got enough of the politics already.

Now all I have to do is find that Virtual Visa of mine, it should have a couple of dollars left.

1. I would like to state my full support for RPC's proposal on page two of this topic. Tantalize us. ;D
In addition, just leaving some good "hooks", like in the "constraints will set you free" article George posted on the Transcendence blog -- that certainly got my imagination bubbling whenever I went back to read it again. Personally I would have liked to see a Commonwealth Special Operations extension as hinted at in the aforementioned blog post.

2. Say George, Pixelfck makes a strong point. So what's keeping that totally-deserved hard-to-miss friendly-reminder-of-the-pageview donate-button that should be proudly displayed on the top of every forum page?

3. Is there any way of paying with, say, iDeal rather than Paypal? I do not like or trust or support that service. Heck, PM me any address or a PO box that you feel comfortable sharing with me, and I will send you 5 euros cash (~7-8 dollars) and pay for the postage myself. Paper bill in an envelope. I simply must have this extension and a donation is long overdue...

4. ...especially since I got word today that the paid content library files will be freely decompilable! An admirable stance to take; certainly a path not intuitively obvious to most game developers. Much respect for that. Certainly confirms for me that I was right to come back to this game you started and that all those who together make sing songs full of fresh ideas, ripe with potential and sweet with promise.

5. Seriously, let me give you my money. Just not through Paypal.
