That Dern'd Defected Auton!

I'd like to think of myself as being a well seasoned player. Saving any embarrassing moments for when I was a nube to the game is exceptable, however, I find myself very embarrassed about having a defective auton being the reason why I've read "...Killed by a 300D Defender Auton" twice in a row!

Of course neither time did I have a targeting ROM installed and without one, an omni laser is merely a straight shooter when going up against a green. Tried to outrun it in my freighter to no avail while it kept pecking away at my class I shield...and then my Heavy Titanium Plates collapsed and BOOM!

So, has anyone else had a run-in with such a situation or should I simply drop myself back down to nube status?

Just 2 times in a row? I've been killed many times in a row by that darn auton. I easily forget it's still following me, and when my shields go down after a battle, guess what? I'm toast. I usually upgrade armor way later than shields and weapons.

One time I found myself in possession of two un-ID'd autons. So I activate one and it turns defective. That's fine I said, I have a Solon. Peck away all you like, I'll even activate your friend in the hopes that some enemy might get hit in the crossfire. I only had kinetic weapons so I couldn't take it down (because every hit form my arbalest would send it flying across the map and by the time it came back it's shield regen'd). SO I ignored it.

SO of course I run smack into a whole slew of missiles ten seconds later and both autons proceed to destroy my now unshielded armor.

I've had trouble with defective autons in the past, but nothing like your experiences.

I've had it while tryign to attack me get one of the Frienly stations mad and I couldn't dock here. I think it was the last Common Wealth Station before the neublulas

I lead it to some enemy station and trick it to shoot it. Me: 1 Auton: 0

If I get one and try it, I just start shooting with my laser until it is DESTROYED.

fyi- defective autons weigh... what? about 2 tons? only buy 5+ton autons anyway- anything less get's pwned WAY too quickly.

I found autons pretty useless later on, so i decided to go ahead and add some of my own- from one with a rapid-fire turbolaser (3x normal turbolaser speed) and fairly heavy armor, to one with the oromo gunship graphics that had a pair of slam-cannons and a kytryn blaster. There were a few other, one was based off the ares turret and was creativly named "the ares auton"

On their sensors it shows as friendly so they don't kill it. I think.

Yep, defected autons are friendly, except their CPU is blinked which makes them think you (the player) are the enemy. Friendly ships will not attack defected autons no more than they will attack themselves.

I think here is where a Morningstar works great whenever a T-ROM cannot be found. Spray the defected critter into oblivion!

Of course, a Fast-Fire Laser Cannon + weapon efficency rom, with it's 1-4 damage @ **15**/second takes anything early-game down quick. Through in a laser colliminator...

Why oh why did I trade it in for the Arablast cannon (that three-shot-repeater) and a Solon?!?

I once (that was the first and last time) bought it as soon as I started a new game. Not on purpose of course, and I used it... and it blew me upage with teh few hitzor...

Fix? Like, you find out what it is, and there is an item to fix it? That would be the sweetness.
