I'm curious. Does anyone use this and, if anyone does, why? If not what would make it worth using?

It's been a while since I used the inertialess, but as I recall, the main drawback was the lack of any kind of coasting ability. So instead of being able to fire the engines for five-ten seconds and then coast on autopilot the rest of the way to your destination, you had to thrust allll the way there. Ate fuel like nothing else.

So, some way to coast without having to disable the drive in the B menu would be nice.

It *was* kind of fun to use. It made dodging really easy. But it seems to be stronger in the close combat field than the exploration field, because of the coasting thing.

Now that I think about it, the fact that you *stopped* as soon as you stopped thrusting meant you couldn't fire on a tangent to your ship's direction of motion. That's a drawback too.

shooting while flying backward (coasting I suppose) is my main fighting tactic.
So I nearly never used it with the freighter.

However I suppose that it can very helpful with the Wolfen, very easy to dodge projectiles, by activating it with B only when needed in fights, and flying normally when traveling between systems.

I have used it with the freighter when I had a HUGE cargo upgrade and was carrying 3500 tons of ore. Normal acceleration was ridiculous so I popped the inertialess on and everything was great. As long as you have an omni weapon the coasting drawback wasn't soo bad.

It's really a matter of style/strategy. It's a decent piece of equipment in certain cirumstances if you know how to use it.
Nebulas are a breeze!

Now if we could get a strafe drive, that would be something!

In standard, I use it only when I play the EI500 freighter. Being able to move and stop instantly helps its maneuverability in a fight or anytime I need precision movement. If I need momentum in a fight... well, inertialess drive kills that option. However, momentum is a double-edged sword for slow, clumsy ships. One time, I tried an enhanced megadrive on the freighter, and reversing direction after overshooting something was a pain. Overall, I think the benefits of an inertialess drive on a freighter outweigh the drawbacks.

On the Sapphire, I would never use it. The Sapphire turns just as fast as a Wolfen and is nearly as agile; all it needs is more top speed (from enhanced Titan or megadrive). Losing momentum on a fast and agile ship hurts.

On a Wolfen, I do not consider using an engine of any kind due to the combination of its speed and too few non-weapon slots.

When playable capital ships from other mods enter the game, inertialess drive is a no brainer for them. Acceleration and top speed are terribly slow, and inertialess drive fixes that.

The inertialess drive is fine for slow or clumsy ships (and possibly overpowered for huge capital ships). In a way, it is a classed item like a spellbook for a mage.

Ways to improve inertialess drive to be useful for anyone?
* Give it the fastest top speed of all engines in the game.
* Give it a special power, such as giving it (some) jumpdrive powers.
* Have it consume less fuel than it does now.
