and by the time that we actually /get/ to that stage in development, computers would be again, even faster. So it's still an issue. And I doubt that you would be seeing 400 or so ships in a system outside of a couple systems in TSB.
And only the current system is ever loaded at any given time.
@schicote: there is NO WAY I'm ever closing firefox and then having to reload it for anything beyond having multiple things waiting for me to restart it. I have my reasons. >.<

Yes only one system is active at a time, but if you notice when you leave a system and come back the system is the same as when you leave. That means that when you get through two hundred systems, you have two hundred systems worth of data, all filled with the stations, shots, and ships saved in what they are doing. That would be a lot of data to store.
Yes, computers would be much faster. For that reason, I am not worried. really. I just thought that the possible problems should be explored.

It would be lumped into the save file, yes, but HDD space is very, very cheap, making it a null issue.

Right. I just mean that the game would take far more data to run than it now does.

But again, its only data on the harddrive, so... unless you are using a microscopically small 40GB or smaller HDD by that time, it should NOT be an issue.
And if you are using a 40GB or smaller HDD at the time that the savegames are that big, you have MUCH bigger issues to worry about that playing transcendence

True. As I said, I'm not particularly worried. Just that the AI would be much larger programs and could cause problems on slower computers.

Five hundred ships won't happen. What will probably happen is scripted AI on something close to current ship counts, but events are nowhere near to being a bottleneck unless they have dbglog statements. The only bottlenecks are collision detection and file IO using dbglog. As long as ship counts don't rise significantly you shouldn't find the game unplayable unless you're already on the edge.
Stop running daily virus scans. You're cutting your hard drive life time for no benefit. Modern antivirus software is proactive, monitoring known infection vectors without needing full disk scans. Weekly is plenty for a private computer.

Hey why not have transcendence to save systems into seperate save files (preferably hidden from explorer.exe view)
such that repeated saves (e.g. i'm doing a backup of my progress after finishing a system/major things) do not take up much space. Instead, what we would find in the (playername).sav would be of player data...
