Anyway, Cirevam has been working on this stage settings and props for a Transcendence-universe webcomic or similar, over here. He mentioned in IRC today that he found an insignia for the Commonwealth in some of George's art files; apparently it's on some ships but invisible at the game's sizes? Anyway, it's this:
Cirevam and I both thought that was a little bland. I mean, it's fine for stationary and marking crates and what have you, but it dosen't really look like a flag emblem or the kind of big crest you'd put on a starship hull / wall.
So I took it into Inkscape (after not finding a good way to make it smooth, among other things, in gimp) and did a quick bezier trace and came up with this; still simple and only slightly embellished but still a lot more suited to large display pieces.
EDIT -- I rendered the first png at a size for putting on a large object in 3d or something, didn't realize how big it was compared to the forums... smaller image:
Umm, it has a fairly thick black border for standing out against the similarly colored commonwealth hulls, but that dosen't show up well againt the forum background.
