"Um... how the heck i should get used to these controls?"
"Oh wow, there're so many damage types~. Wonder whether they work as like in reality."
"Oh, wait a m... *got killed with a missile which was shot from friendly ship*"
"Naah..."
"Time to read wiki"...
"Ok, there's it. *Obtained a lot of mods*"
"Oh... my... fukken... god! *all the place of the screen was taken by marauder platforms (dynamic systems mod)*"

And, of course.
"Hm... *shooting at a commonwealth station*... um... ... ... *the commonwealth station exploded and the shockwave destroyed my ship*. FACK"

First time I played (I think this was version 0.95/0.94, but I know that in this version we still had the old ICS, old weapon names (e.g. "Shtorm repeater" vs "Moskva 33"), and there were no Ares capships besides Polar and Cometfall). I chose the Sapphire.

Had many easy victories in the early game against Charon pirates. I thought that this was how it was going to be for the rest of the game, and so stood with low-level (lvl 3-5) equipment (and a Nova-50 reactor) for much of the game. I couldn't be more wrong.

I got blown away by just about every new threat that I faced (first getting owned by Drakes, then Wind slavers, then Meth enforcers) because I was an idiot who flew with plasteel armor (!!) and a magnetic monopole past St. K's, resurrecting so many times that I lost count. And I thought that whatever owned me was supposed to be some kind of "elite mook", when they turned out to be just simple mooks for their respective level. And I was silly enough to rely on a laser cannon array as my primary weapon. Then I got a gem of despair, warped to Elysium and then to the system 2 jumps before Heretic, and got absolutely destroyed by just about everything (taking on Ares and Luminous with a laser cannon array, plasteel armor and magnetic monopole shields is an excellent way to commit suicide). Cue savescumming myself back to a save when I just made it past St. K's.

This went on with me eventually getting my hands on a Moskva 33 (then called a "Shtorm"), and then laying waste to marauders and Sung (while still not knowing how to get a military ID, of all things!). Then, I went on ahead to the Outer Realm systems and tried to take on Ares, and was obliterated once again.

I called it quits, read some spoilers on the (now closed) unofficial Transcendence forums, and restarted in a freighter. This run went much better since I actually knew what was going on, and bothered to upgrade my stuff rather then trying to run to Heretic in a (only slightly better than) starting-level ship.

I think my first game was with 0.96 or earlier. I think I used a Wolfen.
My first death was (somehow) to meth enforcers (how I survived that long is a mystery)! Lots of resurrecting came later.
I thought the first Sung Fortress pair I ran into (whose Steel Slaver escorts were fighting with a nearby Commonwealth station of some sort. the entire area was littered with dozens of wrecks) was the Iocrym blockade that had been referred to. I was quite disappointed when I discovered the actual Iocrym however many games later. Much less exciting than an (I thought) huge battle with several fixed defences and cool and different looking weapons fire.
I recall it took me a while to figure out damage types and Wind Slavers were terrifying, as were Barbary's and Heliotropes and to a lesser extent Drakes (after the first time I avoided the Huari at all costs). I didn't reach the Ares until several versions later.

To be honest I preferred that incredibly dangerous, lethal and frankly unfair first impression to my current "Can win reliably with no rezzing", but then I liked Nethack.

It hurt a lot at first, but after a while I got used to it and I felt like I was in heaven

I died so many times at first, its not even funny. At first I went with the freighter (captain's primer or the tips page told me to) but I couldn't afford a mining laser and it was hard for me to kill anything, so I switched to a wolfen. The inertia mechanic was difficult to deal with at first, especially docking. But eventually I did get used to it and I have currently beaten the game 2-3 times. I have never explored the Hauri arc, or gotten the lamplighter, or helped the antartica mainly due to my play style of skipping through the majority of the midgame systems and waiting until I happened upon a wreck with good loot.

My playstyle btw is why I consider Dynamic Systems a difficulty reducing mod. I only engage in combat in when I know that I can win easily (early game and after I get powerful weapons). DynSys makes my playstyle easier because I don't attack anybody, I just wait until they kill each other and steal the equipment from their wrecks. Also, I use the pteravores to kill the iocrymn sentinels then scoop up their remains. My playstyle is cowardly and weak, yet also exploits game mechanics endlessly so that I don't have to do any real work.

Murderous hobo FTW!
