XenForo allows users to select their own theme from a dropdown. Is there no option like that for phpBB? If possible I think the best approach would be installing a few theme options and letting the users choose.
Either way, I would definitely prefer a forum theme that is light on dark rather than dark on light like Absolution is. The Black and Greek linked earlier seemed nice, but maybe not as visually interesting as you're looking for.

Anything with a dark background and light text. Please.

this is sadly not compatible with phpbb 3.2
I am in favor of abandoning phpbb altogether and switching to XenForo.

I occasionally had difficulty reading the old forum style in bright light conditions. Otherwise less padding is good so more info is on a page, read/unread topics need to be visually differentiated and I found the date/time display very helpful because I'm on the other side of the planet.
EDIT: Absolution puts code blocks into a little window inside the post. I greatly, greatly prefer to have it all displayed inside the post as per the previous forum style (even though you end up with big posts sometimes). I find it makes it difficult to read code if you cant see all of it at once. The Ministry and wiki do this code window thing as well which I feel isn't as good as a full display.

Stupid code. Do what I want, not what I typed in!

I heartily concur with that sentiment.relanat wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2017 11:13 pmI greatly, greatly prefer to have it all displayed inside the post as per the previous forum style (even though you end up with big posts sometimes). I'll also point out that plenty of old posts used yellow text which contrasted well against the old theme, but is pretty hard to read on this one unless you highlight it.

Any update on the new theme? This one feels rather painful to look at (for me at least)

I messed around with the board settings, so if absolution hurts your eyes, you can at least use the digit theme which.. is kinda broken.

While we're discussing the Forum, can we get the Version Archives post unpinned? The "archives" page hasn't had anything on it for years.

I like it. The dark blue variant is quite nice, even if it's a bit glitchy.
