This has been brought up on another thread. There's actually plenty of background for Transcendence but it's scattered all over the place. I'm trying to put it all in one thread so that, eventually, we can pool it into a cohesive story explaining all the factions.

To start, here's an old post made by George on the Unofficial Forums on Apr 11 2005.
george moromisato wrote:Here is a quick description of the various sovereigns in the game. Note: You may not want to include all of these in the Captain's Primer...perhaps some should be left more mysterious...

Outlaws [augmented humans]: A loose criminal organization involved in smuggling, drugs, extortion, etc. They have close ties to the Black Market stations.

Centauri Warlords [augmented humans]: Armed warlords who prey on defenseless stations. Originally from the Centauri system (near Sol) but now spread-out to many parts of the Commonwealth.

Anarchists [various]: Fanatical group that opposes the Corporate Hierarchy and seeks to redistribute their profits.

Salvagers [enhanced humans]: Each salvager ship is a miniature community and most salvagers live and die without ever setting foot on a world larger than an asteroid.

Heliotropes [augmented/enhanced humans]: A quasi-religious organization founded on principles opposing entropy and energy-death. Heliotropes are generally hostile to other humans.

Sapiens [pure humans]: A small group relegated to the most inhospitable systems. Sapiens use radiation and other biohazards as their weapon of choice against the "devolved".

Sung Slavers [enhanced humans?]: Sung Slavers form a powerful but mysterious civilization beyond St. Katharine's Star. They enslave humans of all races and use them for organ transplants, drug manufacture, and processing power. They are particularly skilled at cyber technology. [Are they connected to Luminous?]

Marauders [augmented humans]: An off-shoot of Charon Pirates.

Death Drugs Cartel [enhanced humans]: The cartel produces genetically tailored drugs needed for hyper-clonal therapy, a life prolongation technique. Because the manufacture of the drugs involves the growth and exploitation of an ancephalic clone, these techniques are banned in Commonwealth space. No one knows how long human life may be prolonged with these techniques, but many believe that the original founders of the cartel are still alive. If so, they would be over two-hundred years old.

Order of Penitence [Simples]: The Order of Penitence began as a voluntary campaign of voluntary extinction. Although it was never popular, its charter was twisted by extremists to promote forced human extinction. They are a feared cult of fanatics who seek to destroy as much life as possible before their alloted time expired. They worship Oracus.

Ringer's Collective [neo-humans]: Ringers began as a colony of miners around Saturn. They have adapted their biology to live in space. Today, their knowledge of science and technology (specially those related to space) is extensive.

Ferian Miners [zoanthropes?]: Almost nothing is known about Ferians since they avoid all human contact. They mine rare and exotic materials and trade with Ringers.

Xenophobes [enhanced humans]: Xenophobes have a closed society which thrives in the depths of space. They do not tolerate other life forms.

Ares Orthodoxy [neo-humans]: The Ares Orthodoxy is colonizing dozens of systems beyond Jiang's Star. They use clone banks and intensive training to create a utopian society without dissent. They claim to be guided by Domina, but almost no one believes that.

Luminous [AI]: Luminous is an autonomous, distributed AI. Its goals and desires are completely unknown.

Ventari: [No backstory yet--other than that they are settlers of some sort]

Ranx: [No backstory yet--other than that they are a military dictatorship of some sort]
Any additions, please put them here.

EDIT: George did mention somewhere on the forums that he'd go for a little more publicity once 1.0 final is released - so, maybe this is a good time to start filling up all the gaps on the Transcendence site? Opinions?

Well, for us in the community, we can get around to finishing up the wiki.
I've got 2 tutorials (general ship graphics and gmax-specific), the ship-guide (about 1/3rd done), and TMU to finish up to get ready for 1.0.

No reason why we can't help out in our own ways to get everything nice and ready for 1.0! :)

What are Simples? I know George explained the different types of humans in the Transcendence universe but I don't recall mention of Simples. Also, what exactly is meant by zoanthropes in this context? Are they people who have intellects reduced to those of animals, are they people of normal intelligence who behave like animals, do they have a society patterned after animal social hierarchy, or what?

Here's zoanthrope from Wikipedia
wikipedia wrote:The terms zoanthropy or therianthropy are also sometimes used for the delusion that one has turned into an animal in general and not specifically a wolf
Also mentioned by someone else,
Enhanced - Gene reengineered
Augmented - Through Cybernetics..

Ofcourse, none of this is official.

And I also read somewhere that the Teratons were related to the ringers.

A good bit of info can be extracted from the XML source files - from the First Contact Monument, Eridani info terminal, Heretic and CSC mission briefings, bar rumors, and more.

We should ideally have something for the Transcendence universe akin to Star COntrol II's "Pages of Now and Forever" wiki.

I'll see what I can squeeze from the XMLs. Some of it is more rumor or opinion (biased by the speaker), but better than nothing.

I'm too lazy to Wiki all of this, so here goes a few loooong posts:

Hostile factions

Charon Pirates

Augmented Humans

A loosely organized group of pirates/privateers that prey on commercial vessels. Individual groups have a high degree of autonomy but they pay tribute to the larger organization.

Like any populated star system, Eridani has its share of dangers. Charon pirates and Centauri warlords control some parts of the system; avoid all non-Commonwealth stations unless escorted or armed.

During the Eridani Bicentennial in 2376, then governor Jerad Norton convinced the Charon pirates to join in the celebrations in exchange for an unspecified sum.

[ship description from Korolov Shipping] Corsair: "The backbone of the Charon Pirate fleet consists of these fast and deadly gunships. Piloted by young and somewhat inexperienced pirates, they are nontheless dangerous in large numbers."

[ship description from Korolov Shipping] Viking: "The Viking-class gunship is powerful and well-armored. It is slower than a Corsair, but more than fast enough to chase down a freighter."

[ship description from Korolov Shipping] Corsair-II: "More than an upgrade, the Corsair-II sports shields and a missile launcher."

[ship description from Korolov Shipping] Viking-II: "The Viking-II is an upgraded version with shields and dual turbolasers."

[ship description from Korolov Shipping] Drake: "The Drake is the pirates' mobile battering ram. Heavily armored and loaded with missiles, the Drake will pummel you to pieces from long range."

[ship description from Korolov Shipping] Charon Frigate Raider: "The sight of these frigates brings fear to most freighter pilots. Fast, silent, and loaded with hurt, a Charon frigate can destroy a small fleet of escort ships. Do not challenge these ships unless you know what you're doing."

Rumor: “The Charon pirates are a menace. They have bases in almost every system and they prey on defenseless freighters.”

Rumor: “Charon pirates have always been a problem here. They're getting stronger every year. One of these days we're going to have to do something about them."

Rumor: “The Charon pirates are nasty, but you can handle their gunships. Stay away from their frigates, though. When a Charon frigate is out hunting you'd best get away. They'll take you down fast without so much as a warning."

Outlaws

Augmented Humans

A loose criminal organization involved in smuggling, drugs, extortion, etc. They have close ties to the Black Market stations.

The Black Market identification chip is used by pirates and other outlaws to identify each other in the black market. Only people who have this chip can trade in the black market.

Rumor: “You spend 5 credits on drinks. A young stationer next to you comments that its a lot easier to get laudanum now that the Outlaw base is in the system.”

“Star travel is not safe anymore. Pirates, outlaws and worse will attack you. But if you can overcome them, you might be able to improve the weapons and armor of your own ship. Pirates, outlaws and worse live out in the depths of space. They will kill you and take your ship, if you let them. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes.” [spoken by a priestess of Domina]

Centauri Warlords

Augmented Humans

Armed warlords who prey on defenseless stations. Originally from the Centauri system (near Sol) but now spread-out to many parts of the Commonwealth.

Like any populated star system, Eridani has its share of dangers. Charon pirates and Centauri warlords control some parts of the system; avoid all non-Commonwealth stations unless escorted or armed.

The Centauri warlord's favorite weapon is a massive dual kinetic-cannon. Centauri warlords create these weapons by linking together two DK10 Arbalest cannons.

Centauri raiders use twin recoilless cannons, firing light rounds.

Rumor: “It's sad about Raisu station, isn't it? If a corporate fuel station got taken over by Centauri warlords they'd have Admiral Decker himself leading the rescue. But no one cares about a poor, backwater station, I guess.”

Rumor: "The Centauri warlords have many bases among the outer asteroids of Eridani; but if you go there, watch out: Arco Vaughn is there too. Watch out for Arco Vaughn. He is the most dangerous Centauri warlord; his heavy raider is protected against lasers and recoilless cannons. Avoid him if you want to live. Arco Vaughn flies an enhanced heavy raider. His armor is protected against normal weapons; you'll need missiles to kill him. If you want to find Arco Vaughn, go to Raisu Station. Talk to the station master there. She will help you. Raisu Station is in trouble. The Centauri warlords have taken it over; don't go there unless you are armed and ready.”

Himal Separatists

No data available.

Anarchists

Various

Fanatical group that opposes the Corporate Hierarchy and seeks to redistribute their profits.

Rumor: The anarchists don't bother us, but they really annoy the Corporations: they're always stealing their fancy ROMs.

Urak Warlords

The foundries of the Urak Warlords produce excellent armor, resistant to both laser and kinetic damage. The capital ships of the Urak Warlords use a heavy armor that resists laser, kinetic, particle, and blast damage.

Rumor: The Urak warlords are another nutty group, but their armor and weapons are pretty good.

Abbasid Survivalists

An Abbasid thanogram is a neural network initialized from the cerebral patterns of one or more Scholars of Abbasid. The legal, ethical, and moral knowledge of the Abbasid is contained and interpreted by these constructs.

Rumor: Stay away from the Abbasid fortresses. Those fanatics will shoot you rather than let you get close.

Rumor: A woman weeps softly as she tells her story: "Our freighter strayed near an Abbasid outpost by mistake. They had no mercy, they just kept firing on us, the Captain begged them to stop, but the blasts kept coming! Then our cabin got hit and my husband..." She stares into space and says no more.

Heliotropes

Augmented/Enhanced Humans

A quasi-religious organization founded on principles opposing entropy and energy-death. Heliotropes are generally hostile to other humans.

Heliotrope starship fuel is known to be one of the cleanest and most powerful fuels available. Too bad that the Heliotrope don't part with it willingly.

Sunflare cannon: Heliotropes developed this heavy ion particle cannon. Its blast is almost as destructive as a solar eruption.

Sapiens

Pure Humans

A small group relegated to the most inhospitable systems. Sapiens use radiation and other biohazards as their weapon of choice against the “devolved”.

Rumor: You spend 5 credits and listen to a nuclear technician: "I just got paid ten kilocreds to install a radiation room at the Sapiens camp! Those flippers scare me, with all their talk about 'human purity' they seem a little short on the brain scale."

Sung Slavers

Enhanced Humans

Sung Slavers form a powerful but mysterious civilization beyond St. Katharine's Star. They enslave humans of all races and use them for organ transplants, drug manufacture, and processing power. They are particularly skilled at cyber technology. [Are they connected to Luminous?]

Dwarg engineers developed particle-reflecting armor to defend themselves against Sung slavers.

The Sung Slavers of Jiang's Star System transport their slaves in life-support canisters that keep their captive occupants in biological suspension.

You can use tiles from the Sung armor to repair other tiled Sung armor.

Longzhu spheres are antimatter containment vessels used by the Sung Slavers as power sources.

The [St. Katherine’s Parliament] chamber is nearly full as ministers debate a bill calling for material support to the Huari people. Those in favor cite the brutal and cruel treatment the Huari have received under the Sung Slavers. Those opposed recall that the Huari themselves were once aggressors who killed Commonwealth settlers in the Ungoverned Territories.

Rumor: “My sister-in-law was abducted by those filthy Sung. We finally got her released by buying her contract. I can't believe they allow slavery to exist.”

Rumor: "My cousin's best friend says that the CSC Europa got blown up by the Ares. They should pull back the Fleet and have them fight the slavers! You know what I mean? What's the point?"

Rumor: "Not all slaves can be freed from the Sung's enslavement. Some are lost to us forever; we keep them here so they can continue their work;it is the only peace they know." [spoken by Huari High Priest Apotamo]

Rumor: “After the Sung stole our worlds and after we retreated to our refuge, the High Priest of this temple prophesied that all we had lost we would one day regain.” [spoken by Huari High Priest Apotamo]

Rumor: "The Light brought me a dream, not long after you arrived. I dreamt that I floated above all the stars of Humanity. I saw the fortresses of the Huari and the stations of the Commonwealth and the evil citadels of the Sung. I even saw Earth and the red-green world of Ares Prime. But every world I saw and every place I looked was devoid of life. Only the ruins and ashes of our lives remained. It was as if a blinding fire had cleansed the universe of us and all our works.” [spoken by Huari High Priest Apotamo]

Rumor: “The Sung use slaves to develop their technologies. Thousands and thousands of human minds number-crunching inside their steel coffins. […] The Sung have pursued us for hundreds of years. They took our stations and our worlds. […] The Sung drove us from our homes; they enslaved our best minds; and they hunt us still in every system save one. […] After the Sung holocaust, our people fled these systems. We retreated to our hidden refuge of Huaramarca. There, our people cling to survival and wait for the return of the Solti." [spoken by Huari Governor]

Marauders

Augmented Humans

An off-shoot of Charon Pirates.

“...and so I urge my fellow ministers to meet this challenge. With the appropriations of CP1175 we can finally provide enough resources to the Militia in order to secure the safety of our citizens against Marauder tyranny." [spoken by the minister from 70 Ophiuchi in the St. Katherine’s Parliament]

Death Drugs Cartel

Enhanced Humans

The cartel produces genetically tailored drugs needed for hyper-clonal therapy, a life prolongation technique.

Cancer dust is a complex blend of oncokillers and nanomachines that cures most forms of human cancer. This is an unlicensed (and thus illegal) batch, most likely manufactured at a Death Drug laboratory.

The minister from Kinder's Star reads a bill [in the St. Katherine’s Parliament] commemorating the death of Militia Colonel Simon Francis Jezerski, who was killed in the line of duty in a confrontation with the Death Drugs Cartel.

Rumor: An old man talks to you, “I don't trust the corporate medlabs; they talk about drug shortages while they munch on oncokillers and antigens! I'm going to the Death Labs, what's the worst they can do? Kill me?"

Dwarg

Dwarg raiders use a tough polyceramic armor that resists particle beams. Dwarg engineers developed particle-reflecting armor to defend themselves against Sung slavers. Dwarg behemoths use heavy Holochroal armor, which reflects particle and ion damage.

Dwarg masters use the cnidocyst cannon to paralyze their targets. Dwarg behemoths use a thermonuclear cannon.

The minister from Numerianus speaks in the Center Well [of the St. Katherine’s Parliament]: “My fellow citizens, if compassion is not enough to compel you to vote for this bill, then consider the risk that we take by opposing it. If we do not provide a safe home for our zoanthrope brethren then the Dwarg will happily exploit them."

Order of Penitence

Simples

The Order of Penitence began as a voluntary campaign of voluntary extinction. Although it was never popular, its charter was twisted by extremists to promote forced human extinction. They are a feared cult of fanatics who seek to destroy as much life as possible before their alloted time expired. They worship Oracus.

Very little is known about these exotic, dark-matter weapons [Absolution cannon]. The Order of Penitence uses these weapons in their ships.

Rumor: “Say, you're not a Penitent, are you? Good! The Penitents only care about power and death; Oracus controls them, you know."

Xenophobes

Enhanced Humans

Xenophobes have a closed society which thrives in the depths of space. They do not tolerate other life forms.

The Xenophobes developed this powerful ion weapon [Xenophobe ion lancer] for their Worldships.

A rare alloy invented by the Bennin Xenophobes, meteorsteel interferes with most shield generators.

"There is an Iocrym artifact in the [Heretic] system that could help us to learn much more about their technology. Unfortunately, a Xenophobe fleet found it before we could study it and now they are refusing to share it. The Xenophobes are a pest here in the Outer Realm - I don't think anyone will miss them if you destroy them and take the artifact back. […] Killing a Xenophobe fleet is no small thing. But look at it this way: they would have no problem killing us. And ultimately, out here at the edge of Human Space, we're all alone.” [spoken by a representative from the Taikon Research Outpost TVX-1]

Rumor: You spend 5 credits buying drinks for a mercenary. He talk about his encounters with the Xenophobes: "The minute I see their green ships I turn tail - I'm not proud. And you shouldn't be either!"

Ares Orthodoxy

Neo-Humans

The Ares Orthodoxy is colonizing dozens of systems beyond Jiang's Star. They use clone banks and intensive training to create a utopian society without dissent. They claim to be guided by Domina, but almost no one believes that.

During the Syrtis War the lightning cannons of the Orthodoxy were devastating to the Earth Fleet. Ares engineers created [the Ares positron archcannon] after the Commonwealth developed defenses against their lightning cannon.

The R1 deflector was developed a few decades ago to protect Fleet ships against the powerful lightning cannons of the Ares Orthodoxy. The R5 is an updated version of the R1 deflector, designed to resist the Ares Orthodoxy's lightning cannons. The NAMI mine launcher is used by the Commonwealth Fleet to defend colonies in Ares space.

The Commonwealth Fleet awards [the Ares Campaign Ribbon] to all who have been in combat against the Ares Orthodoxy.

The minister from Zhang Li makes an impassioned appeal [in the St. Katherine’s Parliament] for a bill funding the construction of three new Commonwealth Star Carriers. She shows pictures of refugees displaced by the Ares, but the chamber is nearly empty and her energy fades in mid-speech.

"In 2240, Starton Eridani was almost evacuated because of rumors that a large Ares fleet was approaching. It later turned out to be a group of Salvagers traveling together."

"Help us, Human! The Iocrym are our common enemy! Defend us from their sentinels. […] Welcome, Human! It is good that we can meet under peaceful circumstances. Like you, we are studying the Iocrym, for they are as much a threat to us as they are to you. […] On Ares we would say, 'May you find water,' but in your honor, Human, we say 'Good luck'. […] Good fortune, Human! Based on your encounter with the Iocrym outpost we have analyzed their defenses. Although their technology is far beyond ours, they are not invincible. They are particularly vulnerable to antimatter weapons. […] Welcome back, Human! Perhaps someday our two races will become friends.” [spoken by personnel at an Ares research outpost in the Heretic system]

"Three months ago we received a coded signal. It was from the Ares. Or at least from some faction of the Ares. They offered to negotiate a truce with us. [Admiral] Decker refused - he thought it was a trap. But I wasn't so sure. After we left the Fleet, I met the Ares here in the Dantalion system. I have a message to take back with me to St. Katharine's. […] When we get back to St. Katharine's we will bring the Ares peace plan to the Commonwealth!” [spoken by Captain Helios of the CSC Antarctica]

“For the last few years we've been working on a new weapon - something that can hurt the Ares and win this war.” [spoken by Admiral Decker of the CSC Terra]

"The Ares have been ruthless. When we lost the CSC Europa, the damn Martians deliberately targeted the emergency capsules. We taught them a lesson after that, though: we torched several of their communes." "If you ever get back to the Commonwealth, you've got to tell them to send more ships. We're getting killed out here and I don't even know if anyone back home cares." “This war has been tough on the troops. We've had to start scavenging for vital supplies. I'm not surprised that the discipline in some units has deteriorated.” "You ever meet a Martian? Not the meek little Syrtians - I mean the Ares clones. They all have this smug look of superiority that cranks me up. They look better in the crosshairs of TeV 9, that's for sure!" [comments from various CSC Captains]

The [CSC Hospital Ship] Medical Officer complains about how hard it is to get medical supplies this deep in space: “We're getting killed out here fighting the Ares and this is how the Commonwealth thanks us - no supplies, no reinforcements, nothing!"

“I have a ROM with information, you know what I am saying? Take it back to the carrier; but watch for the Ares - they are looking for it too! […] The ROM has experimental results from a secret project called Lamplighter; I do not know any more than that. All I know is that it is important.” [spoken by freighter captain Juan Carlos Uribe y Vazquez]

“I'm General Verner and Point Juno is my stronghold. The Ares have hit us hard in the last few months. We lost the CSC Europa in the last battle and now I'm left with no carrier and precious few gunships. We've tracked a large Ares battle fleet on the other side of the system and we know that it's going to hit us soon. But what worries me is that there is a second battle fleet somewhere around the asteroid field nearest Point Juno." [spoken by General Verner of fortress Point Juno]

Rumor: "I've been flying for the militia for years, but I'd much rather be helping the Fleet. No one's seen them in a long time. They must be at the Ares Homeworld by now."

Rumor: "My cousin's best friend says that the CSC Europa got blown up by the Ares. They should pull back the Fleet and have them fight the slavers! You know what I mean? What's the point?"

Luminous

AI

Luminous is an autonomous, distributed AI. Its goals and desires are completely unknown.

The Luminous's drones are protected with [Luminous armature] armor. It is a conductive exotic alloy that resists ion and thermo damage. The ion blaster is used by Luminous for its drones.

[The Luminous 5care algorithm] cube contains algorithms used by Luminous to control its drones. When invoked on a quantum CPU, this causes drones to immediately leave the system.

When invoked, [the Luminous 7ame] algorithm will reprogram a Luminous drone and imprint it with instructions to defend its programmer.

Gaian Terraformers

Gaians use [demolition] cannons for their vast engineering projects. The technology to power the cannon is known only to the Gaians.

Ventari

No data available.

Ranx

No data available.

Huari

The Huari temple is dark and cavernous. Huari men and women dressed in long, colorful clothing swarm around you as you enter. They are curious but shy.

The chamber [in the St. Katherine’s Parliament] is nearly full as ministers debate a bill calling for material support to the Huari people. Those in favor cite the brutal and cruel treatment the Huari have received under the Sung Slavers. Those opposed recall that the Huari themselves were once aggressors who killed Commonwealth settlers in the Ungoverned Territories.

[following history guven by Huari High Priest Apotamo and the Huari Temple Governor]

After the Sung stole our worlds and after we retreated to our refuge, the High Priest of this temple prophesied that all we had lost we would one day regain. He said one day a woman would appear and she would lead us to our redemption in the realm of the Light.

Our refuge has at last been discovered by the Sung and even now they prepare to exterminate us.

The Light speaks to us all. And if we don't always hear Him, it only is because our minds are so busy talking.

The Light brought me a dream, not long after you arrived. It was as if a blinding fire had cleansed the universe of us and all our works.

The Sung have pursued us for hundreds of years. They took our stations and our worlds.

The Sung drove us from our homes; they enslaved our best minds; and they hunt us still in every system save one.

After the Sung holocaust, our people fled these systems. We retreated to our hidden refuge of Huaramarca. There, our people cling to survival and wait for the return of the Solti.

There are no files and no records of Huaramarca's position. Even our conscious minds do not know its location. Instead, we have Tuali symbiotes implanted in our brains. The symbiotes will direct you when needed. But there is a risk: if you are a Sung spy or if you mean us harm, the symbiotes will kill you when they are implanted. The symbiotes will stay dormant until you need them. To find your way to Huaramarca, awaken the Tuali with this [thioseptal] drug.

Kobol Warlords

Pteravores

“We want to scan the Iocrym structures that are surrounding the Heretic sun, but the area is infested with pteravores and we don't dare get too close without protection. Follow us and protect us from pteravores. If they attach to our ship they will drain our reactor and we'll be helpless.” [spoken by Kate Morgental of the Svalbard Explorer]

Friendly factions

Sisters Of Domina

When the dream came, you knew Domina had chosen you. You would sacrifice everything for the chance She offered: to join Her at the Galactic Core, the eternal temple of the gods. Leaving your former life behind, you begin the long journey. No matter what obstacles lie in your path, you will not fail Domina. You will reach the Galactic Core." [Transcendence intro screen]

Though far from St. Katharine's Star System, the Eridani System is not the backwater station shown on the 3DVs. The bars and nightclubs of Central Plaza are always ready for visitors. But if you prefer a quieter time, you can travel out to St. John's ice moon and visit the monastery of the Sisters of Domina.

In the sanctum of the Sisters of Domina, the plasteel walls that surround you are micro-engraved with the revelation of Domina. You see before you a holographic display of indescribable beauty and you feel immersed in the energies of a vast cosmic fountain.

“Welcome, pilgrim! Your journey to Domina has only just begun, yet I fear that your road is blocked. Many called by Domina have made it this far, yet none have journeyed beyond. The Iocrym, who no doubt serve Oracus, have blocked your path. They want to prevent you from meeting Domina. Yet faith in Domina will see you through. Many years ago, a convert to our cause dreamt of a repository of knowledge in the Heretic system. Her name was Sister Maryam Harawi and she dedicated her life to finding it. A few months ago, we found an alien archive in deep space. It must be the object of Sister Maryam's vision, and we believe that it contains knowledge that will help you to complete your journey to the Core. It is your destiny to seek this artifact of knowledge and gain access to the information that it contains.” [spoken by the Matriarch of the St. Josephine Mission in the Heretic System]

Domina is the divine intelligence that guides you. She waits for you at the Galactic Core for some purpose. Domina speaks to you in your dreams and visions. She summons those like you to journey to the Core. Perhaps if you reach her you will understand. But do not be afraid;Domina will protect you. The stargates will take you to the Core and to Domina. Seek them out and enter. But remember that the farther you go, the greater the danger. Pirates, outlaws and worse live out in the depths of space. They will kill you and take your ship, if you let them. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes. But with luck and Domina's help you will be able to improve your ship. Take your ease here before you go, or seek guidance at our Sanctum, if you wish. May the blessings of Domina protect you. [spoken by an unnamed Sister of an Domina Abbey]

Rumor: “The Sisters of Domina believe in the power of transcendence, but we worship Domina because she brings life and beauty.”

Rumor: “Domina has a plan and I'm sure that the Iocrym are a part of it.”

[below is a conversation with the Iocrym Archive]

"What does Oracus have to do with us?"
"Oracus has been asleep for the last quinary [~1 billion years]. Now he wakens at the same time Humans begin their expansion into the Galaxy! The last war with Oracus began the same way and it nearly destroyed us."

"Why have the Iocrym quarantined us?"
"Oracus threatens the Galaxy. The Iocrym are protecting the Galaxy from that threat. The first phase is to contain the threat at its point of origin. The second phase is to eliminate the threat."

"What does 'eliminate' mean?"
"The quarantine bought us time to prepare, but it will not last forever. Oracus will see to that. The only solution is to sterilize the entire region. The Iocrym have already begun constructing stellar manipulators around the Gamma Crucis supergiant. When their work is complete they will induce a core collapse

"How do we stop the Gamma Crucis explosion?"
"To reach Gamma Crucis you must break the quarantine."

"How do we break the quarantine?"
"Disable the control point. This data ROM will help you."

"Why is Domina calling me to the Core?"
"I do not know. But the idea to sterilize Human Space was hers."

"What are our chances of success?"
"The threat to the Galaxy is severe. If Oracus succeeds, there is a 72% chance the Ancient Races will be extinct in the next million years."

Corporate Hierarchy

Rumor: “The anarchists don't bother us, but they really annoy the Corporations: they're always stealing their fancy ROMs. Hiro is the best hacker in the 'verse. He's created some fancy ROMs that even the cyber corporations can't figure out.”

Teratons

Etherium is a rare ore with still mysterious properties. Etherium is eagerly sought by Ringers and Teratons.

The traffic in human cadavers is common in the Outer Realm. Many people believe that Teratons use human cadavers for strange experiments.

Tetramite is a rare mineral used by Ringers and Teratons for many of their advanced industries.

Kytryn blasters were created by the Teratons based on research on Iocrym technology.

The Kytryn launcher is a Teraton weapon which launches a Kytryn plasma pod warhead, which blossoms into a shell of plasma energy.

You are docked with a Teraton chrysalis, a pulsing mass of biomechamical systems. You see a bony structure taking shape inside the large spherical structure.

In the peripheral tunnel of a Teraton nest, the hard walls are covered by a sinewous membrane and odd growths hang from the ceiling. There is a foul smell of rot and bile in the air.

The Trading Chamber is a vast, dark cavern where Teratons trade with various human and neo-humans. From a distance the Teratons look like abnormally tall humans, but up close you notice their deformities and mutations.

In the vast central chamber of the Teraton nest, a large pit in the center of the cavern is inhabited by a mass of tentacles, cilia, and grotesque organs.

In a dim cavern filled with arcane equipment, dozens of human subjects, wired, tubed, and in various stages of health and wholeness, lie on articulated beds. A tall Teraton with supernumerary fingers tends to the patients with a mixture of curiosity and concern.

Ringer's Collective

Neo-Humans

Ringers began as a colony of miners around Saturn. They have adapted their biology to live in space. Today, their knowledge of science and technology (specially those related to space) is extensive.

Ringer neo-humans float through the vast volume of the [Ringers Collective] station, perfectly adapted to zero-gravity and space.

These rare crystals [cerusite, malachite] are prized by Ringers for their beauty, but otherwise serve no purpose.

Beautiful and rare crystals of promethium-147, an exotic and powerful isotope, are used by the Ringers Collective as currency.

Etherium is a rare ore with still mysterious properties. Etherium is eagerly sought by Ringers and Teratons.

Tetramite is a rare mineral used by Ringers and Teratons for many of their advanced industries.

The rarest form of uranium, spherical crystalline uranium nodules are prized by Ringers for their beauty.

Hyperdense heirolith crystals are formed inside black holes; they resonate with transcendent consciousness.

Created by the Ringers, the khan plant is a genetically-engineered, cancer-fighting descendant of the lowly tea bush. The jinn-khan variety is one of the most popular in Human Space.

Ringer ambrosia is an exquisite nectar which contains active ingredients that help Ringers to concentrate. Its effect on pure humans is less well understood.

Corporate chefs seek out Ringer spice, grown only by the Ringers, which produces a flavor unlike anything from Earth.

The Positron Lancer is a Ringer weapon which fires a steady stream of high-energy positrons.

Based on a Ringer design, the Hyperion Reactor is an exotic vacuum reactor rated at 1GW peak power output.

The central structure of the Ringers Collective is a large marketplace containing sophisticated and rare devices from all over Human Space. Commonwealth credits are not accepted there: ”Collective does not seek Commonwealth credits. Collective seeks rare and powerful ores and substances.”

A young ringer greets you as you enter the lab. His melodic voice is translated through a device on his neck: "Earthican, welcome! We seek answers to questions related to Iocrym. We seek answers to questions related to their intentions. All human-descendents are interested. Ringer and Earthican are united. Iocrym sentinels attack our home. We seek safety and protection from their attacks! We express joy. Ringer and Earthican are united in seeking answers to Iocrym intentions. [spoken by a young Ringer from the Ringers Research Outpost in Heretic system]

Rumor: “Have you every been to the Outer Realm? Out beyond the Sung Slavers, where the Ringers live? It's miner heaven, I bet. I'd like to go out there some day. Just me and a souped-up Borer. The Ferians are there too; I hear they've got mining techniques like you've never seen.”

Neutral factions

Salvagers

Enhanced Humans

Each salvager ship is a miniature community and most salvagers live and die without ever setting foot on a world larger than an asteroid.

In 2240, Starton Eridani was almost evacuated because of rumors that a large Ares fleet was approaching. It later turned out to be a group of Salvagers traveling together.

Ferian Miners

Almost nothing is known about Ferians since they avoid all human contact. They mine rare and exotic materials and trade with Ringers.

Some of the station descriptions may have semi-useful information, too. Eg for the Ferians:

"You enter into a vast chamber, only partially pressurized. Large metal maws consume a small fortune in rocks and ores delivered by Ferian miners.

Beneath them you see various vessels shrouded by the cranes and girders of a shipyard. Most of the vessels are new Ferian miners being created out of raw materials. A few are much larger and have a more sinister shape."

This tells you that Ferians don't need the pressurising that humans need to be comfortable (or, in some cases, not explode). How that equates into modifications...I don't know.
