Hi I'm new here :)

The planets and asteroids are supposedly in the background, but enemy fire will deflect off them. That means if you are in a heated battle you can stop in the middle of a planet to rest and let shield recharge. You can also edge out so only your guns are pointing out and keep shooting. The enemies end up destroying each other as well.

IMO this makes it a bit too easy.

And it saves lives. Often. Very often, even for wingmen. :D
For Sale: One slightly used EI500 freighter. Hull damaged, primary weapon defective, shields inoperable. Must be towed to Dry-dock. Make an offer!!

If you manage to get a fleet of CSC wingman to stay within a planet you really got skill.

Hi andwheee,
welcome to Transcendence Forums :D

Planet, asteroid and sun sitting is a well known and used survival technique by most (of not all) players.
IMO this makes it a bit too easy.
At the beginning, yes, could be.
Later in game, it could happen that the only way to survive is to fly from planet to planet.
Also, autons are quite fragile. Defenseless autons like the mule auton can safely be parked on top of planets to increase its survivability.
